Ngl it's a weird choice to dehumanize aliens to this extent while also trying to make us feel bad for Lily and his brother. The series is either going to collapse under its ambition of keeping both sentiments or it's gonna have to commit to one of the two stances. Either aliens deserve to get wiped out and kicked off of Earth or they're people too and should be treated as such. I can't see the series taking the latter stance so I wonder if Lily's backstory is less meant to be sympathetic and more just serve as the reason why he's doing it. (if that's the case then the author fucked up by making Lally genuinely likable)
Man here I thought the aliens were the pirate type invaders but they are worst, the nosey kind that start COVID were so cooked. Kill all the aliens!!! Also it's not a weird choice to dehumanize aliens while making you "feel bad" for lally and his brother. These Aliens also live their normal lives with feelings just like us but now they are unintentionally (or intentionally) killing us with a disease. It's the readers choice to go "Kill All the Aliens" or go "they are just like me don't kill them cough yeah they take us for granted and kill us with diseases but they have feelings too~"
I for one tho don't care about the Aliens sure they saved us but now they're killing us Kill them All
What the reader thinks doesn't matter, this is the work of an author and what the author says goes. It's the reader's choice in how they react but the direction of the story, tone, and ultimate message is completely independent of said choice. And, like I said, the story will most likely collapse under the weight of trying to balance two diametrically opposed messages (because nuance is wasted on the masses so there's no point) unless it abandons the attempt entirely and takes a side, which will most likely be that killing aliens is always justified
What y'all are forgetting is that Lally and Lilly were the exceptions, they experienced first had how their own kind treats those of lesser capability, and were genuinely confused about the worship.
Lilly eventually started indulging into the excess due to peer influence, whilst Lally was just happy to be accepted...but the latter eventually became the easy target for the same excesses the former dipped his nose into.
One could say that they represent the aliens with good intentions, actually good ones, that eventually either become part of the problem due to the normalisation of it or quickly wiped out from the larger equation.
Until they finally tell us where the initial worship started from,we won't know who to blame for really kickstarting this mess.
Comparing it to rampant immigration, though,we know the ones to blame are the politicians who stood to gain from the aliens(even with severe future backlash)and the incredibly dumb folk who never once thought 'bout the consquences, just hopping on the bandwagon to make themselves look n' feel like they're doin' good for the world.
Also, nuance is not wasted,it's what allows dialogue to begin in the first place, plenty of folks can easily spot the difference between a few good people and the horrendous larger social structure full of corruption.
That nuance is why,try as the morons might to call anti-rampant immigration folks racist, the push back against the trouble makers stems from the non-equal treatment for punishment of heinous crimes with no guranteed deportation.
Same nuance also allowed a certain purple haired British lass to break her ass out of the wrong think propaganda and into the representation of true British values.
