Didn't this guy kill the overlord of that other dungeon, causing the entire arc over trying to kidnap Ryuuka to their place instead? Like, I doubt it's about childhood love triangles (off the bat anyway) and probably more that he'll straight up murder the person Van cares for most if he's allowed to do what he wants. It's why Van's knocking all the other monsters aside so they don't get caught up in a murder frenzy probably.
