@FlamingSquirrel I agree on the crazy. And I think it's likely that he'll end up wiping about just about everyone he can find. Mostly because he's escalating things. Like you said "any connection to the crime" might be incoming as a cause of death, but unless I misremember something the killings so far have at least been "guilt by assistance" but a village (unless a very weird place) would seem to be a good place to escalate his madness into also taking out "guilt by association" people.
Your "final ending" suggestion is a good one. If he (as expected) goes further monster then I hope it ends up something like that.

Some stories have really slow/boring/deceptively generic beginnings and later get good.
