As a matter of fact, there is indeed a method of carpentry that uses no nails or glue. It’s a Japanese technique known as kanawa tsugi (金輪継) that shapes wooden supports so that the joints fit together like perfect little puzzle pieces. It was developed because of the very problem you mentioned; iron was hard to access, so there was a shortage of nails.

You don't really need nails to build a house. Look at Stave Churches as an example. Even in terms of furniture you can make a lot of amazing stuff without nails. It is just harder. But someone hiding from the world at large like elves and beastmen would have the know how.

Of course the story will probably just handwave it away and go with modern looking stuff that needs nails.

All the stuff that's depicted can be built without a single iron nail. Besides the japanese technique mentioned above, there's also the venerable and trusty wooden dowel.
And honestly, the whole point about real furniture making is that you don't use nails.

What really is pure madness is that the mangaka will have us believe they used green wood from the freshly chopped trees for those things..

Mortise and Tenon joints have existed for thousands of years.

But the bigger question is where are all those carpentry tools coming from? And if they're building everything from scratch, then those tools will need maintenance, and, and and-

Plus fresh wood from trees will shrink and that's very bad for structural material (cracks) or even walls (leaks).

And like, they bothered to floor her house? Did they go ahead and sand down those planks until they won't get splinters in her feet? (or actually since she's the miko and immune to damage, maybe they just skip that step )


This is like Hamefura anime showing "poor peasant" Maria's house... with glass windows, lol.

There is something more hand wavy than that... Where did they get the glass for the windows from?

Lerunda's consistent spirit of helpfulness is so endearing. Lan is right about having to set some rules. There are 3 different races and cultures (not counting the intelligent gryphons) mixing in this new village, and to prevent conflict and disputes, rules and boundaries that respect each other's customs must be set.

On page 17 I can almost imagine that Lan is starting to see Lerunda as her own little sister. I don't know anything about Lan's real family, but Lerunda would do well to have her as an adoptive sibling.
