Seems like a family of humans. They might be the first human immigrants of the new village IF they can be trusted. After they got the elves in tow I was already expecting them to eventually help humans who'd come and live in their village. They don't seem to be citizens of either human kingdom, so maybe that will help them get accepted.
I'm liking the very slight kingdom-building feel of this arc so far, it's just a tiny village now but years later it can be a small town. If the beastkins and elves keep to each other the village will be more like two adjacent villages with a chief each, but someday maybe it can have a mayor overseeing everyone. Heck, maybe an older Gaius can walk in his father's footsteps and be that leader in the future if Lerunda herself doesn't end up in that position.
