Actually, his explanations with the condoms was pretty spot on, if you're talking from a military perspective. It can be used as a water storage medium and it can keep your gun in a working condition, if there's too much sand or mud.

Yeah, condoms actually have a LOT of military usage, mostly revolving around protection of delicate parts (gun barrels, etc.) or storage of perishables or contaminables (pure water being the most common, although a combat medic I know has used them for containment of biohazards when nothing else was available).

On a separate note, would densiplast knuckle gloves (the things Rory equips on page 13) even hold up under her strength?

Frankly, condoms really are excellent makeshift spare waterbottles you can bring with you for one..
If he had lied about that instead of his current lie, the others wouldn't be quite so likely to figure it out right away.
(Let's be honest, how likely is it anyone of them wouldn't realize as soon as they'd think of how you'd put it on the gunbarrel?)
