Possibly a decision by the editor of the author. Such changes like these are usually the brainchilds of editors most of the time.I'm not going to lie, this whole plot about Gard wanting to resurrect his sister feels like an afterthought by the author. Up until now, there was no indication that this was a driving motivation for him. I mean, Gard only joined the magic academy because he was banished from the count's territory he served, and by sheer coincidence, a pamphlet advertising the academy flew into his hands. Where was this sense of urgency or dedication to researching magic before he got kicked out and stumbled into the academy? It just seems out of nowhere.
Thanks for the chapter!
eg.: The decision of having Shank's hand consumed by the seaking was an idea by the editor of Oda at that time.
