not gonna lie. I have zero knowledge about who exactly the characters listed as dead/missing were.
vast cast of characters with everyone showing up only briefly every dozen or so chapters + monthly release schedule: not optimal

Don't worry. They were either a part of the "teachers" Vysis brought in a while back or the neighboring kingdoms' military aces. With the decimation of the dragon riders, Cattleya is now in an advantageous position to negotiate for the return of her kingdom (it was given to the dragon rider's kingdom).

Maybe i'm dumdum but how are people hostile to the goddess going to be a obstacle? Unless bro thinks he killing her is more important than her being dead.

Anyone else think that at least one of those missing students just bolted? I’m honestly surprised more didn’t. What exactly is their motivation to fight and die in this war besides the goddess telling them/threatening them?

The goddess is a very good manipulator. Don’t think it’d be too much of a stretch for her to trick the classmates into defending her. Saying that the demon god army or whatever is after her life and we’ll destroy all humanity once they kill her. Or that she is the only one who knows how to send them all home. Either way Mc absolutely does not trust the classmates that’s kind of killed him And mocked him while doing so. Wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to get revenge on them later Which will probably bring him in conflict with this girl

Takao Hijiri- She could be manipulated into believing the world would be worse off with the goddess gone, regardless of how shitty the goddess is. Thus she would be motivated to defend the goddess.

Ikusaba Asagi- simply put, he doesn't know enough about her motivations and thoughts, but knows enough about her abilities that she can be an obstacle.

I really am infuriated by how shit the anime adaption is . Didn't take any of the essence of this manga at all
I liked the anime. Contrary to the vocal haters, I thought that it did a good job with 3D CGI.

3D CGI can be (and frequently is) done poorly, but IMO the Fatal Frame anime did a good job of it. In particular, they did a better job of meshing it with the 2D -- in part by (counterintuitively) using it more rather than less.

Of course, opinions vary, to each his own. People should watch it when they get a chance and make up their own minds.

Each one of the big heads can give a reason why Touka can't trust them and has to be worried about them in the future.

- Kirihara, Yasu and Oyamada : They're completely full of themselves (especially Kirihara). Yasu is an unknown factor, his bullied past could come back to bite him, so maybe he could change or not. Oyamada is an unknown factor as well, he's completely submissive to Kirihara (and we don't know what happened to him either), he could get a change of heart too if Kirihara and the Goddess betray him and he's left on his own. Kirihara is very unlikely to change position on the board, but you can't never guess with him.

- Hijiri is unreadable and looks like a stoic unfazed girl, but very smart. So Touka doesn't know if she can be an allied or not (it makes someone really dangerous when you have little knowledge about them). He doesn't know either that Hijiri knows he could be alive (neither if she kept that information for herself or not).

- Ayaka is an unknown factor as well. She could be a strong ally, but how will she react when Touka threats her classmates safety ? Attacking Allion is sure to harm his classmates in a way or another. And also there's the fact he didn't give her his true identity and the fact he survived. Not a good start to make someone trusts you... especially when that someone tried to save you.

- Asagi is probably the worst of all. Touka seems to know her in some ways (I mean, both of them are manipulative people who use the other to get what they want), but... what does Asagi want exactly ? He doesn't know (and we don't). We know that Kobato is staying with Asagi's group in hope that it will help Ayaka in some ways or another (Touka doesn't know that of course). But like Hijiri, Asagi is an unknown and very dangerous player on the board.

Yeah, especially now that there's an English dub.
I'm currently watching the dub version.

Simple answer: Yes, the source material has a lot of characters. Similarly with the LN, I had to go back and make some lists.

Students
While most of the class are followers, the various group leaders all have their own characters. The world does not revolve around the MC. And given their different characteristics, they may or may not stand in the way of Mimori. (E.g. if Mimori decides that he needs to kill a classmate, Sougou might stand in his way.)
  • Mimori Group (Seras, etc.)
  • Kirihara Group
    • Kirihara: Arrogant and rich
    • Oyamada: Delinquent (MIA from this fight)
    • Some other A and B guys
  • Takao Group
    • Takao twins: Hijiri (Brains) and Itsuki (Meathead)
  • Sougou Group
    • Sougou
    • Various Cs being protected by Sougou
  • Yasu's Group
    • Yasu, bowl cut, bullying victim turned jerk.
    • Some other boys. Now merged into Sougou's group after Yasu bailed on them.
  • Asagi Group
    • Lead by Chigasaki Atsuko. Popular and cunning Gal.
    • Various girl followers
Kingdoms & Main Groups
Roughly, the continent is a circle.
  • Center:
    • Great Ruins and Golden monster area is in the center.
    • Witch Erika is here.
  • NW: Yonato.
    • Ruler: Queen
    • Forces: Holy Order of the Purge. Led by Revered Saints, aka Angoon siblings
    • Classmates: Asagi group was sent to Yonato.
    • We haven't seen much of Yonato yet.
  • N: Magnar:
    • Ruler: White Wolf King (MIA)
    • Forces: White Wolf Riders
    • Demon Empire is north of Magnar, so it's the main front for battles with the demons (including the battle we just wen through, which happened at the southern edge of Magnar, just north of the Central Monster Zone).
  • NE: Alion
    • Ruler: Wise King.
    • But, goddess is based here and is the real power. She has strong political power over the other kingdoms because she is able to summon heroes.
    • Forces: Thirteen Orders of Alion (We haven't heard much about them yet.)
  • SE: Bakoss
    • Forces: Elite Dragon Knights: Mimori killed the top 5 of them. Several others died in this battle.
  • SE: Holy Empire of Neah.
    • Subordinated by Bakoss fairly recently. Formerly ruled by king, now headed by Princess Cattlea.
    • Seras was head knight for Princess before it fell to Bakoss.
  • S: Ulza
    • Ruler: Monster Slayer Jin
    • Forces: Monster Knights, led by Banelight (badly injured this battle)
    • Where Mimori was when he got out of Ruins of Disposal.
  • SW: Mira
    • Wildly Beautiful Emperor Falkendotzine
    • Forces: Band of the Sun
    • We haven't heard much about Mira yet.

I bet that half of the people complaining about the horrible 3D CGI for the anime adaptation are also praising Overlord's 3D CGI to be the best thing they ever saw

Why would it? Anime is to promote the original work, not adaptations that don’t have to be exactly the same.
