Given how this manga has progressed up to this point, and the skill at which the author has woven this sweet love story, it would be incredibly strange if she fumbled the ending.

This is just tension. I really like the fact that it's so realistic. Most other manga would have them resolve Chokki's feelings of holding him back the first time this issue came up and be done with it, but it's obviously not going to go away.

But, and I hate to be so cliche, this is part of growing up! Chokki's still a kid that doesn't see how she can have this relationship with Shun while also letting him chase his dreams...if that's actually what he wants. All he said was "I want to properly play soccer again", not "I want to dedicate my life to soccer again". I do feel like she's once again kind of jumping to conclusions here. Despite everyone else saying he's wasting his time, he looks for her immediately after winning and goes directly to her afterwards. Chill girl! He still obviously cares about you so much!

She's going to graduate before him and they won't be able to keep this go-home relationship going (home), anyways, but that doesn't mean they can't find a situation that works for their friendship/romance in the future.

Like I said, I don't foresee the author fumbling this after writing such a banger story so far. I believe these two love birds will figure it out!

Can you provide an example of a single Olympic or World Championship medal relay team that had their fastest runner at anywhere other than anchor (or 1st leg in certain cases where they are a notably strong starter).

You can just Google "relay 2nd runner fastest" or something and you'll see that this has been conventional wisdom for decades. Even if you're going to move the goalposts and say this isn't the correct world class strategy, this is a high school romcom and they're using the far and away most common high school track strategy. Debating that says a lot more about your track experience than it does the authors, sorry.

Okay. I stand corrected. In researching this, there are different philosophies and I see plenty of advocates for either having fastest runner as second leg or as anchor. Even for the 4x4 surprisingly enough where the length argument doesn't apply. My coaches opted for strong anchors back in the day but I'll admit that this perhaps isn't as universal as I had thought.

imagine bridge to terabithia
we're getting too much of her perspective for that to land right, and you couldn't switch the roles either, but imagine the version of this manga that set that up properly and did it, legendary

"starting today we're childhood friends" is the other major candidate for this what if

this manga is really good at drawing girls entranced

If the firefly chapter is foreshadowing then I doubt the mangaka is going for the bittersweet ending. Though I can't deny that a bittersweet ending would be plenty romantic in Chokki's sense of the word. You also have Chekhov's gun (or Chekhov's Japanese history textbook, I suppose) from a couple chapters ago.
