Given the crack, that plasma weapon is gonna explode in his face or whoever else uses it last.
It's a horror setting, everyone that is not the percieved protags are dumb as bricks.
Tbh I bet its going to send the aliens survival instinct through a loop. 'Like wtf I'm going to blow up if I attack this useless sack of shit. How? Why?' Which is probably why the captain is still alive in chapter 1 cause he's got the equivalent to a bomb vest strapped to him without even realising it.

MC is annoying in the sense he acts smart but does dumb plays and says the cringiest stuff to boost his ego.

I think captain is stuck in a super shit sandwich. He knows he's screwed if he bails because the company will hunt him down not only for the loss of assets and equipment but the death of the research woman who started this whole shit show.
He's still got a few "hopes" which aren't really hopes but he's too far up the creek to go anywhere else, the first is the pirate attack can be used to hide most if not all the shit that's been happening so he still needs and wants them to attack to divert interest off his ass. The second hope is the plasma pistol although he's in no way smart enough to use it effectively nor notice any damage to it which is funny because people should think the "smart" monster would've disabled, destroyed, or taken the thing that harmed it but he's just so happy to of picked up this convent "life line". The last hope I'd imagine is as captain his room is probably a fortress the AI heavily guards so he can keep hiding in there but we really haven't seen any smart plays on his part so I'd guess he's a failed upwards kind of dude playing politics more than anything else.
The main thing we haven't seen much of too is the AI doing things, one of the few things scifi stories usually aren't shy from is how crazy complex AI systems can be and doing routine scans of it's vent ducts and something crazy like the power core, where the first nest is, should be standard although we don't really know the significance of "nests" beside they allow the MC to feel comfort so maybe they don't really change that much environmentally that an AI could detect like temperature or air quality.

They have video proof of the alien so that's one thing they can take with them to avoid getting in trouble especially cause the chick died and they are sending people to investigate, them waiting out for pirates while allowing people to roam is dumb for the fact the more fortified you are he better you can hold out.
MC has the claryavoinc ability that warns him when he is gonna die an even shows him how he will die which really ruins anything these humans have to throw at him.
Not to mention you're right the AI systems for being advanced, really don't help out not to mention can't they control the vents like force cold or heat to see if it will effect him. And they heard MC talk and fool everyone so why keep risking your life if you are gonna die either by the company and if you have proof they might spare you...or an alien who will legit just kill you in any way possible no matter how much you beg
