Well, he just parried the attack. His luck made the artillery got redirected to the industrial area. Then the homing magic thingy made it lock onto concentration of magickal energy.

It's like the AGM-88 HARM in loiter mode: It locks onto source of radiation and sends a greeting from the god of Death.
