JOHN BROWN DID NOTHING WRONG BUT BE DEFEATED

also side note it annoys me how many version of the song entirely remove the whole battle and marching song aspect and turn it into an orchestral rendition instead of something you can sing and stomp your feet to. Also would be the better national anthem for America then that song about a flag because you know its focused on the people of America rather then simply its symbols

i'm considering turning this thread into a contest that lasts at most 60 days from the original post (as that's when editing permissions expire), i.e. July 18. the winners would be decided by how many songs of theirs that i added to my playlist (and if i already had a song on my playlist, it would not count). there would be cash prizes too because that's all i have to offer. thoughts?

thoughts?

Two from the same band. Spirit was an odd group - their drummer Ed Cassidy had fought in WWII, then drummed on the West Coast with a number of top tier jazz names for some years before moving into rock music, and was 42 when the direct predecessor group was started in 1965. His stepson Randy California was only 14 at the time, and during an early hiatus spent several months playing in Jimi Hendrix's band before Jimi went to England and made a major name for himself.

From the first (self-titled) 1967 album (which contained the track "Taurus" that was the center of a long-running plagiarism lawsuit against Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven"), the song "Uncle Jack", a very period psych-rock piece.

A bit over three years (and three albums) later, from Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus, a song nominally about Cassidy (with the title referencing his shaved head), "Mr. Skin". The change is radical - the band's sound is tighter, and the recording techniques have advanced considerably - and does a good job demonstrating the maturation in both Spirit specifically and the overall heavier rock scene in the intervening period.

I just like sharing my songs and seeing talk about them because of the rating system.

I might just do a successor thread in that case

8.3/10, it's certainly catchy and has withstood the test of time, but there's no way i could ever see it replacing the Star-Spangled Banner. just imagine standing at a baseball game and listening to it instead of what we have.

as for an actually fitting potential national anthem replacement:

7.4/10

7.5/10. not sure whether the band members would appreciate this comparison, but the song sounds to me a lot like the Beatles. especially the vocals. if you played it and told me it was a Beatles song that never made it to album i might believe you.

also it's crazy how much you know about so many artists. do you know it all off the top of your head or do you have to double check some parts? either way it's still a lot.

A bit over three years (and three albums) later, from Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus, a song nominally about Cassidy (with the title referencing his shaved head), "Mr. Skin". indeed much different from the previous song, and i can no longer accuse them of sounding like the Beatles. it seems that by the time Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus came out in '70, they had really come into their own, commercially and artistically. 6.9/10

that was my daily quarantine song, billions must meguuusad
nice. i think my quarantine songs were almost exclusively weeb shit and 2000s girlypop music

Zutomayo - Aitsura Zen'in Dousoukai
expected this to be a lot more generic than it was, but eh it was alright. 6.8/10

Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton - We've Got Tonight
i have high standards for duets, and this doesn't meet them. 6.4/10

on second thought, i don't think i'll turn this thread into a contest. i do think it could be interesting, but i don't want to turn it into a competition (also, the best time to make it a competition was the very start of the thread). i'll still probably rank all users by averages and 'songs added to my playlist' and such by the end of 60 days.

I might just do a successor thread in that case
i'd definitely participate. idk when you plan on doing it, but fyi i'll likely end this thread around July 18 since i'll no longer be able to edit the original post (and it'll probably be dead by then too lol)
