As someone who has read the novels, all I have to say is that Rei’s background story is really sad. This story will involve Rei, Kanato, Misaki, and Kosaki, and it deals with very sad topics, such as homophobia, transphobia, attempted suicide, and ultimately in the end suicide

Actual heterosexuals rarely care much about homosexuality. The fight is mostly between homosexuals playing straighter-than-thou and those whom they victimize with this pretense.

As much as I would LOVE to agree with this take (Which in this context makes sense to a fair extent, as this is Japan) christianity's wrong stereotyping of homosexuality runs really deep in the veins of the majority of the western world. The most common victimizers of homosexual people on the world are still their own families IIRC. So there's this whole idea of the concept of parenthood and family being contrary to an alternate sexual orientation to the one that brings children, which leads to often violent reactions from parents. (Cognitive dissonance one could argue)
Not saying the other case isn't true either. In fact, it is still quite common. I just felt like leaving that nuance there.

Now to add into it, an unhealthy environment at home is my bet to why she's acting like this. This level of asshole-ness is usually related to trauma.

As a big fan of the original light novel, I'm really happy this story arc is getting a proper adaptation so far. Ever since the drama with the official LN publication, I'd been worried that the manga would try and tone down/side-step the real-world LGBTQ content. Those bits honestly took this from a fun yuri isekai manga to an all-time favorite series for me.

we see how they handle the transgender characters, both in the game universe and in the flashbacks.

...But thus far I'm cautiously optimistic.

That being said, it's definitely as hard to read these parts as it was the first time. Hits pretty damn close to home with my own high school experience, too -- right down to the whole innocent interaction getting twisted by the rumor mill and homophobia.

I'm really curious as to how the full event unravels, hostile friend groups are very tricky to pull off but considering how the source and manga adapt. have been able to do other tricky subjects well, I'm pretty optimistic.

I actually agree with this. You always hear about the homophopes being closeted themselves but in my experience that hasn't been the case. I live in a small town in east Texas that is full of homophobes my mother being one of them. I don't think it's possible they're all secretly gay.

Misaki is pissed because Misaki is into Shiiko (and is also a closeted trans man). Kosaki is a manipulative girl who acts cute to get her way and is into Misaki.
