Let's see what he is cooking here. I liked the twist but I was hoping for a switch to Ta-kun's point of view. I don't really care for back stories told via flashback but it was inevitable in some form. I just wish it was told in real time from Ta-kun's perspective, like an internal monologue after the kiss.

Ed. by the way, it appears reddit won't post it anymore so I have to check for updates here.

I just re-read, she appeared in ch.5 & 15 (excluding those in their group chat). I have to warn you that Ch.5 just hit unexpectedly hard though.

Now, after re-reading, I don't think we weren't totally lied to all these time though.
The fact that they met on the exam day after he took it, means that, at the very least, Yuu did try to chase Hikari up to that point. Although we could take everything in Ch.16&17 at face value without any meaning deeper than it appear and it'd mean he really just saw Hikari as rival, I'd argue his reaction in Ch.18 suggest otherwise; I do believe he was interested in Hikari at that point in time.
So, my head canon is like this:
-Yuu had a crush on Hikari up to highschool > met Ayami on exam day > they date at some point and broke up > Yuu moved on and turned back to Hikari > things were progressing(?) as we have seen > shit hit the fan when Yuu met Ayami again in the cultural festival and the old flame sparked

Edit - just realized I wrote weren't to were... that's just make the meaning opposite, damn me...
Yeah that pretty sums up my thoughts on the matter. It also seems like Ayami had to repeat a year due to her absences but her meeting with Yuu made her decide to stick going to school.

It occurs to me that maybe they BOTH still love each other but he broke up because he found out about her sugar/compensated dating and felt betrayed. That's perfectly understandable, especially if she was continuing to "date" while they were GF/BF even if it was "one last time".
While possible, it's important to note that they coincidentally met on her "first date" which seems like an unimportant detail unless she's interrupted without it starting.
That said, we also know
  • She goes back to school within a few months of this event (she's a 1st year at the same time as Hikari)
  • She's once again living with her family soon
  • Her stepfather is in some way abusive, the details of which are not clear yet (could be sexual, could be some other form)
It could be that she pushes him away because of the complicated and unpleasant situation of her life and she didn't want to "ruin" him in the process. I suspect that her affection for Hikari comes from the latter's simpler idealistic outlook in life. In a way, she's using Hikari and her love life as a fluffy wholesome way to help her forget her own situation.. kind of like the readers here before last chapter :dogkek:

Seen from Yuu's PoV this is a rather conventional romance/coming-of-age story, one day when he was feeling down he met this mysterious girl that cheered him up and by helping her deal with her own problems he himself grew as a person and they fell in love, here Hikari would be the secret childhood friend that gets added 100 chapters into the manga (a little too late) when the author runs out of ideas, we were just seeing things from the losing heroine's PoV all along

This chapter's title is "It happened, a year, and a half ago", if Yuu was taking his entrance exams at that time it means they're currently in their 2nd year

You misread. I said she "was a first year at the same time as Hikari". That doesn't mean she is still a first year, just that they went through first year together and since at this point in the story Hikari is about to start there, she will be returning to school soon (in a few months, this is winter and school starts in spring).

Imagine if Yuu just went "what does Hikari have to do with anything, i don't even love her that way" if Yumi actually tried to break things of permenently last chapter but couldn't.

i still don't get it why some authors make the girls sooo arrogant and rude to mc but he treats them very well despite that, it's so stupid they don't have pride ?

7.55 as of this post. Lordamercy.
It's called vote bombing and that's why these ratings don't matter. Do you really think that this manga is Absolute Trash with No Redeeming Values like a "1" rating indicates?

Her family name has change from this "past" chapter (Matsushita) to the "present" (Sudou), too. Note that in THIS chapter her mother is ALREADY remarried so Matsushita would be her name in the "fucking bastard" marriage. This implies that at least her mother and stepfather have divorced (and reverted the name) and perhaps her mother has remarried again.

I guess we'll find out more in the upcoming chapters.

This is such a turn that I had to make sure I hadn't accidentally clicked a chapter of some random new manga I hadn't read before.

I feel this wouldn't be so bad if all the chapters actually had something to them, it's been over half a year and so many been under 10 pages and just revolved around 1-2 page set-up -> 1 page punchline. It fully felt like a short weekly dummy romcom and now there's a complete tonal shift. I dunno if it's the author not writing enough or if the artist is unable to keep up, but to do a story with big dramatic beats then this is gonna need more then 6 page chapters every 2 weeks to establish characters.
