This is the story. It's not a flashback, it's arc 2, with a new protagonist.

It is a flashback in a technical sense. We did drop back to a time prior even to the first chapter as presented to us.

Narratively, though, it's a telling of another portion of the larger story from previously unseen points of view. And we'll likely take a third pass where we get exactly what was going through Yuu's head from even further back: when he fell for Hikari, why he thought he had to catch up to her academically before he could tell her, how (or even if) he gave up loving her, and so forth.

The chapters of the novel and manga are released simultaneously, and Maruto mentions that he added some lovey-dovey scenes, like those in chapter 26, at Yom's request. However, adding these scenes slows down the pace of the story.

I could be reading too much into that twitter exchange, but it seemed like the author was trying to deflect the blame from himself onto Yom and Yom was replying sarcastically. But maybe I'm just being cynical.

Nah, first off, this is a flashback. And honestly, I don’t see what’s so good about Yuu — he’s just a wishy-washy guy. Sure, Hikari likes him, but she could do better. As far as I’m concerned, Ayami can have Yuu, as long as Hikari moves on and doesn’t get involved with Ayami and Yuu anymore.

4 months of something I understood the full story of like a month in. End it, go back to the confrontation. Literally who cares this is all fluff now, I get it.
She wanted to fuck the innocence out of the boy caught feels, has a shitty life and they love each other. She broke up to avoid hurting her friend even though she still loves the guy.
It's not something that needs 4 months of explanation, it's a very brain dead simple thing to understand. Would you really want 2 hours of avengers endgane to explain how the time travel works instead of just seeing the avengers go stop thanos? Because that's how this feels now.
