I don't see what's so hard to understand. She is obviously still in love with him and he came to find her (doesn't matter if it was on purpose or not) despite her attempts to avoid him. The rest is just a heat of the moment.
Until we get Yuu's perspective, we can't confirm that he went to their school specifically to meet Yami. In fact, he was hesitant to accept Hikari's invitation and only agreed because she was upset with him.

My hypothesis would be that it was a mix of both.
He was hesitant because he knew there was a chance he would meet Yami and that could be very uncomfortable. However, she never appeared and because of that he got an urge to actually meet her since he most likely still has feelings for her.
That's just an assumption of course, but seeing how emotional he is in that slap-to-kiss scene, I can't help but think it's something along those lines.

So.....she was the one who broke things off? Just to get this last bout of freedom out of herself? So she can take care of the mother she "broke" out of pure guilt?

Then, if she was the one who broke things off, why initiate the kiss with the MC if you were "done" with him? (before the flashback)

Again, I appreciate more context with the character, but it's leaving with more hanging questions now.

She broke things off with him because her family situation went from "seriously fucked up" to "completely fucked up," and she didn't want to drag him into it.

While that might feel cliche, she's very much acting like a certain type of child from an abusive household, where everything is their fault and they'll just accept blame and take responsibility for everything. She's been told all this is her fault, so all of this is her fault. She doesn't deserve to be happy, and she shouldn't drag anyone else down with her. All she'll ever be is the failure of a daughter who broke apart her mother's marriage and ruined her life.

I imagine that Yuu asked her what the hell happened, and it went from there. Cause she didn't STOP loving him, and the last thing she said to him sounded like she was fucking dying of cancer, telling him to have fun, to fall in love. He probably didn't forget her. How COULD he? They had a serious thing going. They broke it off because she didn't want to tie him down, something he wouldn't have accepted if he knew. Considering we get him going "but" and her going "Shut up! Who do you think you are," and them stepping closer and kissing, I can easily see him pushing the subject and her feelings overwhelming her. Because he WAS the only light in her life, the only place she felt she belonged. She willfully left him because she didn't want to drag him down. Him even broaching the subject of "I think that's a bad thing for you to do to yourself" would probably cause a cascade failure of emotional barriers.

i agree that the reason yuu was initially hesitant to come to the school was because he didnt want to meet Yami. tho i would disagree on him having an urge to suddenly meet Yami when he is at the school tho its more likely that when Yuu is waiting for Hikari to end her shift, he just happen to meet Yami and then the drama from chapter 21 started.

I can't argue against that because we have no clear evidence. However him wandering off from the clubroom + him getting very emotional when meeting her makes me think it wasn't just a coincidence. And don't forget Yami's line about "Why do you always manage to find me, Yuu?" (quoting the WN here).

Probably dramatizing more than it needs to be, I know, but regardless, tragic homewrecker is still a home-wrecking bitch.
were she a home wrecker if there were no home to wreck? both childhood friends were indecisive enough not to do shit, it's perfectly normal for any one of them to be swept up and to move on with a more proactive person.

She also slapped him as if he was a fault for the breakup, though it could be something he said unrelated to the relationship before the slap. She even yelled "Who do you think you are?!"
we also do not know what Yuu said to her. she prolly still loves him, but knows or fears what she is or might become, and do not want to fuck up his life.

and she is kind of right.

it would suck for a "normal" person to live with a "complicated" one.

I speak from the perspective of "complicated" person. chronic depression. problems with sleep. constant mood swings. meds barely working and sometimes more problem than help. tried relationships more than once, seen how bad it become for a secon party.

Yami is like that, probably.

He moved on, instead of being a complete and utter simp and wait for the FMC like most romcom male leads. Which is weird because I'm pretty sure people hate those kinds of leads
yeah i understand why people saw Yami as a red flag but i never understand why Yuu is also being called one lol. Like i get maybe him suddenly moving on even though his goal was to catch Hikari is not ideal but thats hardly a red flag when you consider the reason why he does move on.
