Cos she had a bad life and tried to make others worse, and now she feels REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD ABOUT IT, so we should all feel really bad about it too!

Like, what people want to gloss over and forget, is that before all this shit went down and we had to join the pity party for Senpai, she literally kissed Yuu. And it wasnt just a kiss, she wrapped her arms around his neck and held on. She acknowledges that Hikari likes him, and that she is literally going around looking for him, and she still pulls this crap, and we have to feel bad about her having a shit life?

So, what about all the people out there that also had a shit life, but instead of needing a two year long pity party, they put the shit behind them and tried to live a better life. Why aren't they afforded the same amount of happiness?

Wait nah you right I do see him being a little uncomfortable even going to the school though I still think its wrong of her to drag him around like that with no elaboration.
It's not just that he is hesitant to go to the school. She was also desperately trying to avoid meeting him.
She wasn't trying to get him back is what we can say for sure. The rest is speculation at this point but my bet would be that he still has feelings for her.

First, some information: from what I understand, volume 2 includes two extra chapters There are 2 extra chapters that are venue-exclusive bonus books —13.5 and 29.5(?). The Spanish translation team got their hands on both and translated them. Chapter 13.5 contains some relevant information, and below is a second-hand translation of it:

Chapter 13.5 - A constant dripping of endless sadness

*Yami stands at the entrance of a station, gazing at the falling rain. Her thoughts drift to Hikari.

*In the classroom, after chapter 11.

Yami: Your boyfriend's name is 'Yuu', right?

Hikari: He's still not my boyfriend, not yet.

Yami: So, not yet, huh....

Hikari: Well, let's stop talking about it, Aya-chan.

*Back to Yami gazing at the falling rain.

Yami (in her mind):

It all started when my best friend went to the amusement park.

Curiously, the name of the person she likes appeared in a small group of 4 people on line.

I knew the odds weren’t low... and yet, I kept ignoring it... But... the guy my best friend likes...

And the guy I deceived being the same person...

A tragedy that would make anyone laugh.

*In the classroom, after chapter 12.

Yami: So... you’re saying he’s had someone he "likes" for a "long time"?

Hikari: Yes, that’s right. I didn’t realize it until I heard him talking to that girl that one time.

Yami: Wouldn’t the answer be obvious?

Hikari: But how would I know? before, I didn’t even care about his feelings.

Yami: Don’t worry, the person he likes is definitely you.

Hikari: Are you sure?

Yami: I can guarantee it.

Hikari: well, if that’s the case~

Yami (in her mind): Exactly, only I can guarantee it.

*Back to Yami gazing at the falling rain.

yami (in her mind): I was the one who heard Yuu mention his childhood friend so many times and how much he loved her...

Yami: It’s fine...

Yami (in her mind): That’s why I can guarantee it.

*Yami walks out into the rain

Yami: ha ha ha... ha.

*Yami stops

Yami (in her mind): God... That's not fair.

Insight: This chapter confirms that Yami had known for about three months that it was the same Yuu—and did nothing about it.

Chapter 29.5(?), titled "Pajama Party," revolves around a pajama party with the four girls at Hikari's house, set in March of Year 2, if I’m not mistaken. What stands out in this chapter is Yami’s wish for Hikari’s happiness, along with Hikari’s reflection on the strength of their bond. Hikari believes that the connection between the four friends is more important than her feelings for Yuu and recognizes that Yami is an irreplaceable friend.

Insight: With friends like Yami, who needs enemies...

Not gonna lie, I get that the author needs to make money, and the only way to do that is by selling the volumes. But it’s pretty lame that extra chapters with relevant information are only in the volumes venue-exclusive bonus books. Chapter 25.5, which doesn’t have any important details, was released for free. It could’ve easily been an extra chapter for the volume venues instead of something like 13.5.

Second, regarding the chapter, the author mentioned chapter 15 when posting this one. Chapter 15 is the girls' swimsuit party, so yeah, it's the same apartment, the same view of the fireworks (one year later), and even a line about the crowds at the end. My thoughts on the chapter:

Thanks for the chapter!
Going back to this - WN version of chapter 13.5 is now translated. The note says it was indeed bundled with volume 2, so I guess it goes like this: Volume 1 included the Pajama party chapter, Volume 2 included chapter 13.5 (the rainy day).

Just to be clear, Chapter 13.5 takes place more than a year after Yami ghosted Yuu.
Also since we now know that fireworks happen around Yami's birthday and assuming that fireworks in chapter 15 happen for the same festival (could be a fixed date or something like last Sunday of July), the timeline for 13.5 is slightly earlier than a year after the breakup:
(Year 1)
  • (Late July) Yuu and Yami come back from the seaside, she starts ghosting him
  • Fireworks festival and Yami's birthday is a week after that (so late July or early August)
(Year 2)
  • Chapter 13 is late June
  • Chapter 13.5 is probably around the same date (so late June or early July)
  • Chapter 15 is (most likely) the same fireworks festival and Yami's birthday or close to it, a month after 13.5 and a year after the breakup.

Another thing of note is Yami thinking that the person Yuu was talking about being in love with in chapter 12 is 99.9% Hikari.

This ISNT “show don’t tell” though, it’s a multi-chapter monologue. It’s basically a fuckin text dump just because you visually see it happen doesn’t mean it’s not “telling”.

The issue is that instead of things being brought up as they become pertinent to the story the author is just offloading all this information now instead. The better way to have done it would be to intersperse the details throughout the narrative as they effect the characters in real time. Yuu doesn’t know this shit, Hikari doesn’t know this shit, so it STILL needs to be actually addressed, which means putting it all as a huge unbroken monologue completely worthless and just drags the pacing to a crawl.
It's called POV switch. You never watch or read a story with dual main character, or even played a game with dual main character?

The issue is context and timing as I’ve tried to explain. This is not the time or place for this, narratively. Like it or not the story, even if you liked it, is shoehorned in at the worst possible moment pacing-wise. I’m not saying Yami can’t be important, or she can’t have a backstory, or even that ALL the events are pointless to discuss, you don’t “introduce” a character during a climax and then immediately dump a volume’s worth of backstory.

It would be like in Star Wars if immediately after Vader says “Luke I am your father” we hard cut to the entirety of Episode’s 1-3.
The last of us part 2 did exactly that and no one seems to mind it.

With Yami assuming that Yuu was referring to Hikari, the cliché would be that Yuu was actually referring to Yami, while the unconventional twist would be that Yuu was indeed referring to Hikari.

Yeah, I'd say it's most likely that Yuu indeed meant Yami, and I can see that happening after how their relationship ended, especially with his last question being whether he did something wrong.
On the other hand, if it's actually Hikari, that would be like crushing that last small hope Yami subconciously had. Which could hypothetically be the reason for the slap (though I really doubt it).

??? Lowkey I didnt find the fact that the two of them were together before to be an issue, at least until this weak ass excuse of a "break up". I get that she wasn't in a good space mentally, but up till now they've shown us NOTHING that is that serious. Like, yeah, your parents divorced, you have to "deal with" (as the manga has also pointed out) this large sum of money but that doesn't make you any more well off. How does any of this point towards her rejecting his kindness? Am I just fucking autistic or smth?

No, that's the point. Being "not in a good space mentally" 'causes her to not think about any of this rationally and be stupidly self-destructive.

ETA: Remember, her plan b/f she hooked up w/ Yuu was apparently paid dating. And she'd functionally dropped out of (an apparently very good) school. Dating Yuu is one of the better decisions she's made (and as I've said, I don't think it was all that great either).

Maybe reread the previous chapter? Her mother attempted suicide and is now fully dependent on her daughter, desperately clinging to her while still being toxic, a mix of love and hatred.
And with chapter 13.5 it is clear that she is still like that after a year

What a monumental waste of time this was. The result of this flashback is me caring the amount for Yami as I did before (that is to say, none at all).

The whole thing comes off incredibly forced, with the author coming up with this sad backstory for a background character that feels completely unnatural and out of sync with the series up until that point. Instead of feeling bad or caring for Yami I'm just tired of this le tragic heroine bit that's been dragging on for too many chapters.

fuck childhood friend yami has to win

If he takes her back after being ghosted for a year that would be so fucking funny what a pathetic guy
The main character's been pathetic since day 1. Dude told Yami he was in love with another girl and that he's trying to "reach her" and then proceeds to fck another girl that same day, like 💀💀💀 then you WERENT in love to begin with, dude 😭😭 Idc if he is a teenager or not, he's definitely a bad person and Yami is too since she still had sex with him knowing he has somebody in his heart already💀 I genuinely can't sympathize with her, like, yeah, im sorry that you had a pitiful childhood and shitty parents but that doesnt excuse you acting like a bitch and a homewrecker 😐😐😐 the first arc was SO cute and then this shit happened. Im genuinely so upset at the author...
