At least from my perspective, it's contrived drama / tension and a replacement for complex writing and unique plot devices. Literally just going "we need to create a conflict to stretch this thing out" "just add a mosquito girl" and then everyone has to go down the extremely tedious and well-trodden path of MC being a useless no-balls coward for like 15 chapters and then some "goddamnit I'm gonna show FL that my feelings really are sincere" for however long it takes,
It's super unnecessary, people really believe that "drama" like this is what sells, if anything that would kill the story depending on what kind of plot is being used

I think in some situations it could do well, especially if written the right way. The main problem being more than half of the time this situation arises at an unnecessary time.

The other issue is that this scenario can be resolved with proper communication and characters with an ounce of awareness. But this is manga, asking for both of those things out of characters is a tall order. Gotta keep characters denser than lead and about as communicative as a Magic 8-Ball.

Honestly though, I think I prefer this trope over "Oh, you like [love interest]?! Well, you have to prove to ME that you're worthy of them!". That's one I'm real sick of seeing.

Off the top of my head, not "My wife is a little scary" or "Divorced crybaby moved in next door" or "broken childhood friend" or "Nagatoro" and probably many, more. However it is a staple of the romcom and romance genres.

It doesn't look like this will actually be a serious thing as this manga leans more on the comedy side and is pretty light on the drama.

What exactly bothers you about this trope? Why does it make you so mad?
Add Aketsu and Yancha and that's pretty much it. I hate the needless drama it brings. I want Romance Comedy in my Romance Comedy and having multiple love interests isn't easy to write, and it almost always comes down to the "Second Girl" being more aggressive and forcing the "Main Girl" to step up. I blame Komi San for destroying any enjoyment I had of this trope by having the famous Fake Out "Second Girl Wins" then a week later taking it all back. I just got sick of having issue after issue dedicated to nothing but fluff, it's romantic filler before the "Main" couple actually has progress.

And I'm not talking about Harem Manga's, that's important to note, but Romance Comedies with a single focal point(usually with the girls name in the freaking title). Then around issue 10-20 the author or editor has to jam in the "Second Girl" and all the fun charming one on one moments fade away. It happens every... single... time... The exceptions are not the rule.

Even stuff like Boku teased the blonde for a couple of arcs but made her a good friend/wingman. But Nagatoro has TWO annoying second girls with the Student Body President and her sister who love to strip naked for no reason. And don't get me started on "Broken Childhood friend" and needless drama, it went Gal Cleaning on us and added a r*pe subplot which ruined the series for me. I still think about that cup shaking in her hands almost a month later, hate it.

This has the Adaption tag but does anyone know what it's adapted from? Would like to read it if it's from a light or web novel.

I'm not quite sure if this is the original source of the story, but it is older than this manga.

It is a youtube video about this story in a oneshot.

I'm not quite sure if they are made by the same author but they are very similar...

In the words of Parzel Man in chapmanganato aggregator side commenter
"Okay comment section crusaders calm the hell down it's just a side character to being in some plot. I bet if the author kept going without her y'all would be complaining about lack of plot"

I mean, two of the four you named as examples have a good reason not to have competition. One girl came from a verbally abusive relationship, and the other girl was sexually assaulted when she was a freshman in college. It wouldn't serve the mood that either of those has for the author not to resolve any "competition" with 1 or 2 chapters. They are "feel-good" manga, where the MC shows that they are the driving force in bringing them back from the brink of depression, helping them at every turn and never doubting them.

I do think Nagatoro is a good example. Off the top of my head, Uzaki is a good one too. Ami was never EVER a real option, just a lame fan ship. I do agree that the trope isn't present in everything, but it has elevated its presence in non-harem romance manga, specifically. It used to be more exclusive to Shoujo manga, but more and more shounen manga have dedicated "competition" girls (or guys), and its still hella lame.

I don't care how many side girls are introduced or even harem or whatever, as long as the girls are cute, I'm fine with it.

What the heck is Hoshino doing? Insulting Eiji-kun's lover and lying isn't going to win you points with him. Aoi has been very kind and thoughtful with Eiji. You on the other hand are just barging into his life and are making him very uncomfortable.

You want him to spend time with you. Aoi, on the other hand, wants to spend time with him. There's a big difference.

And this is the crux of my personal complaint above. To make this trope work, multiple characters have to act insufferably stupid or ignorant or in manners that make me, the reader, want to punch them all in the face.
