At least in this manga he didn't mysteriously stay fat despite training and eating properly. He just gave up immediately because the continuing bullying killed his motivation.

But damn, that "in another world you will get massively rewarded after suffering so much in this world" theme was blatant in this story. He performed the heroic deed of opening a door and got a bunch of cheat skills. Ironically the owner of the door, his late grandpa, kept telling him to smile to find his happiness, but it was his frustration and rage instead that actually led to that happiness, when he accident found the hidden room, as a result of his outburst.
