In my brief and ancient AD&D experience (when it was still sometimes called that, ha)... I had one group where everyone wanted to be magical and one group where everyone wanted to be rogues. Both were too fragile and wiped so of the mono-class options, fighters seems the most viable.
The first time a fighter mono class runs into an enemy with mentally attack shit, they wipe immediately.
The only class that can truly be called self reliant is the Cleric.
Has:
-Healing
-Spell slots
-Access to their full spell list
-Good all around saves
-Good attack bonus
-Can wear armor, unlike mages
In short, Clerics can do everything. They heal, they do combat, they cast spells that can round off the usual utility gaps. And if a cleric specializes in a field (like combat) they can easily exceed a specialized class like Fighter. They've been on top ever since 2nd edition.
