In my brief and ancient AD&D experience (when it was still sometimes called that, ha)... I had one group where everyone wanted to be magical and one group where everyone wanted to be rogues. Both were too fragile and wiped so of the mono-class options, fighters seems the most viable.

The first time a fighter mono class runs into an enemy with mentally attack shit, they wipe immediately.

The only class that can truly be called self reliant is the Cleric.

Has:

-Healing
-Spell slots
-Access to their full spell list
-Good all around saves
-Good attack bonus
-Can wear armor, unlike mages

In short, Clerics can do everything. They heal, they do combat, they cast spells that can round off the usual utility gaps. And if a cleric specializes in a field (like combat) they can easily exceed a specialized class like Fighter. They've been on top ever since 2nd edition.

Depends on what you mean by "self reliant" since that's a scale rather than a binary trait. The Bard has access to similar things, plus naturally good at social encounters and better access to the Rogue part of the skillset, so it's also a top-tier versatile class.

Clerics are definitely the best for a mono-party comp, but it's hard to say "specialize in combat" better than fighter. It's been a long time, but from top of my head fighter gets: weapon specialization (for better or for worse), better HD/con hp adjustment, a better THAC0 table, the ablity to use any weapon which means longswords(!!!) and ranged weapons vs blunt weapons, and supplemented with some smart use of items and tactics you can go pretty far. From personal experience and as an example, you don't really need to cast fireball if you can get the conditions just right to form a dust explosion and pull out a lighter. Magic is just vastly simpler and easier with less hassle to get all the conditions right.

Course that's at the cost of the ability to heal wounds, the sheer utility spells bring, saves (lmao what is spell saves??), but if we're going with just a stand-up brawl, fighter is called fighter because it's good at fighting. It's not like clerics need to be better at fighting anyways nor should a mono-comp need to be looking at excellent, just good enough in all fields to do any job that a situation demands

And then paladins are basically the best of both worlds at the cost of high req. stats and a narrow code of conduct.

Bards in adnd iirc were a stat-locked class, hence why they are thief+. You had to roll well on your stats enough to even select the class.

The reason I say clerics are better is because they can self buff. Wasn't as much a thing in 2nd edition, but in 3rd, you could stack all kinds of spells, buffing strength, buffing to-hit, enlarging yourself, casting defenses to increase AC, saves, etc.

With buffs you're easily hitting harder than a fighter with more accuracy. Weapon specialization doesn't trump all those spells, and the better hit die is a marginal advantage imo.

Not sure if anyone has theory-crafted before me, but something is giving me the feeling that in the end this story is all going to be a DnD campaign setup to try to get him to become not a NEET or something.

Anyways. It's definitely a chicken-man. Body of a man after all. A man-chicken would just be weird.

As a side note, wonder why the scores for this are so low on the different list sites. Even as a casual DnD fan it's just a fun ride, if only for the shitty memes and references.
