What I wonder is, why would paladins stress out from the potential of using Smite Evil on the wrong target? There are four possible cases: Real enemy, evil aligment; false enemy, evil aligment; real enemy, non-evil aligmnent; and false enemy, non-evil alignment. The first is a good attack, the second is bad since it attacks a non-enemy, the third is a missed attack on a real enemy, and the last one is confirming someone as non-evil with no damage. There are two good results, one that isn't worse than any other missed attack and shouldn't be too stress-inducing, and the last one is very unlikely to happen in the first place while being no worse than any regular attack on the wrong target.
There's a sort of fine line between gathering information and taking great risks.
And I think she's in a good spot for exactly that. Smart enough to realise it's a good chance for information that could be easily lost, and both righteous and reckless enough to take the risk.
