They're not quite at the medieval level technologically, maybe 16th-18th century level. The industrial revolution may be right around the corner for them. As for the synthetic materials...depending on what you are pointing to, they may not be synthetic. Even materials like clear polymers can be made in reasonable quantity in fairly primitive chemical labs. It all comes down to what you know of chemistry, and a bit of process engineering knowledge doesn't hurt either.
