On the other, I don't think it's likely to make much of a difference in how the characters behave. I mean, sure, it's good that they're choosing to remain rather than being forced to, but the way it usually gets written makes it the same relationship either way.

It probably says something when the relationship someone fantasizes over looks the same whether it's voluntary or not.

Hey, I personally liked the reasoning - most of the time, the Hero's main reasons are idiocy to the point of disbelief when they kick a tank. In this one, it's clearly the Hero seeing the childhood friends getting too close, and so he's getting rid of the Paladin to separate them in the misguided belief that the girl will stick with him and not leave as well.

Personal reasons make for better thought out stories.
