Yeah, I think she's actually been working to keep that height gap the same in some sort of subconscious effort to keep their relationship stable.

I think you guys forgetting two things

1. we been given recorded heights of them in both serialized and pre-serialized works
2. in theirs schools (Japan) they legally obliged to change the footwear upon entry and exit (along with uniform regulation).

Anyway, I think claw machines are rigged.¹ The machine gives you a probability to get the doll instead of relying on pure skill. This is no different than a slot machine. That is why they are considered gambling devices in some jurisdictions.²

In some countries, like Taiwan apparently, they're controlled basically by setting 3 voltage regulators: one for bottom, one for halfway down, and one for all the way up. More voltage = stronger grip. If you max them out, they can lift many kilograms, easy. But they obviously set them such that they grab fairly strongly initially at the bottom, then gets weaker as it's going up, and finally a hair trigger at the top.

Of course sometimes you do get the "every 50th try gets higher voltage up top" stuff too.
