Those aren't random background characters. I'm 99% sure that's Sakuragaoka Kanade and Mebuki Sakura from Sakura Discord, Masuda Eiji's previous work. This is further supported by the page 3. The line "a small step can unexpectedly change the world" is the most important line of Sakura Discord (though I knew it slightly differently due to the translation).

This series is really special. In any other story I would have given up in frustration at two perfectly able-minded high schoolers struggling to even say "Good Morning" consistently, but here I'm just enjoying the ride and rooting for them both. I think it's because the other 3 passengers serve as such a good audience surrogate/Greek chorus for us readers. They not only add to the overall comedy, they help keep the interactions (or lack thereof) between the MC and FMC interesting and not annoying like they might be otherwise. Adding them in was a great idea by the author!

I can just watch the pictures and not read the text - watch the reaction faces characters make - and I think I would have like 70% of the satisfaction I have from also reading the text, but like 95% of the laughter cause that comes practically only from the gag-faces.

I was wondering the same thing! Though according to someone else they're characters from Sakura Discord, which I read long enough ago to apparently forget that. Definitely not an alien though, no head screw.
