No payoff with regard to that cunt of a director is going to make my blood pressure spike. Fuck that guy. I know it's not that kind of manga but mannnnnn...
I mean that’s at least pretty realistic. Prick bosses very rarely get their faces mulched by their employees or even face more administrative or legal punishment for it if they don’t go too far (into physical or sexual violence). Definitely makes me feel for Fumi in that regard.

She barely cared about acting to begin with, and his career as an AD died anyway. At worst, the Japanese purity faggots and paparazzi vultures would be off to gangstalk someone else within a week even if he had chosen to openly elope with her. In the end of this episode of his life, he was definitively shown to be a spineless coward who couldn’t be there for someone stupid enough to love him when it really mattered. I mean you certainly can rationalise cowardice in the name of self preservation, but it’s still cowardice.
You underestimate how much of a grudge a Japanese company can hold for an employee that dirties their reputation, by hiding him they somehow could keep it as a rumor but if he showed himself, regardless of their true relationship, they'd be frame however the media wanted and that'd hit her agency and his company real hard. And both, he and her, could be damn sure they would never get another job in the country outside working part-time at a convenience store. And he definitely wouldn't have been able to get his current manager role.

So yeah, there was a lot at stake for him to just say "fuck it, I'll go see her." Of course, he could have handled the situation a lot better by explaining that through phone and staying in contact with her to help her stay sane since she got the worse part of the deal, once things calmed down and he found a new job he was free to go see her again.

Well unless you can point to an example of that happening, I think you’re vastly overestimating how much power some regional TV studio has. Oh I can definitely see them not getting the same jobs in the field, but he had a black enough stain on his record for being fired for no-showing, and yet still got hired somewhere in a different capacity as an accountant.
I mean fuck, Aya Hirano was in a WAAAAAAY more explicit scandal and she still has a career, it’s certainly not what it was in the Haruhi days, but she still gets work.

Getting silently fired for not showing is a lot easier to carry than getting fired for being involved in a scandal with an actress.

A bit underwhelming, but in a nice way I think.
Still hope she'll make a comeback somehow, though I highly doubt it. Also, I don't think he's changed that much since that incident, which could lead to spicier things.
Also, also, good for him to have his friend and family to get himself back on his feet. And to buy a WRX STI.
Thanks for the chapter!

Akari needed someone to save her. And she fell in love with Fumi's kindness, and thought he was the hero who was going to save her.
But Fumi can not save anyone, he is lost and broken, he is the one who needs to be saved the most.
And now, Ayano fell in love with Fumi's kindness too. She is desperate to grow up and make him notice her while she tries to learn what is it that love is.
Up until now she only wanted to take from him. But now she is beginning to wonder what is that she can do for him, what is it that she can give back to him. And soon she will figure it out.
She can save him, and she will do so. She is the 'hero' the title is referring to.

You're thinking only of the outcome and not the lingering issue that plagued their entire "relationship". Fumi never wanted to commit or see Akari for who she was. He placed walls and barriers around them right until the very end.

Now that is fine. What's not fine is that he chose to do things half-assed. He'd still see Akari. He'd still see her dad, because being with them actually made him happy, yet would still reject them if things got uncomfortable. It is entirely a matter of communication and ignoring the real feelings of the people he's associating with because of his own fragile self-esteem.

It's a bad look no matter how you slice it. Akari cannot be blamed one bit for her choice. The real issue in the present is that he is repeating the same mistakes. Shiraki, who was completely outside the Akari matter, calls Fumi out on his indecision so the narrative is clearly framing Fumi as the "problem" here. Ayano is similarly confused because she doesn't know where she and Fumi stands, as he has yet to make that clear (this isn't totally his fault, mind you. Ayano is nuts). Bro needs to decide what he wants and to go for it.
This. This is exaclty why she called fumi selfish.

I think this backstory was great. Fumi was spineless in a pretty realistic way and Akari was both taken and went along in the ride. It's a messy situation that makes sense. It's depressing and shows how dedicated Fumi was to the work but not the actress. I like it, it's like a double edged sword and I wonder if he might try to go an extra mile this time with ayano to ensure the same situation doesn't happen, or it ends up burning even harder

It’s a shame you can’t pin specific comments to the top of a thread, because this is the one that needs to be seen by everyone. Idol fan culture can be unbelievably toxic — all the worst parts of inceldom, complete lack of boundaries, and parasocial entitlement all rolled into one. Absolute cancer.

It fascinates me how we can have the same level of interest in celebrities here in the west but genuinely don’t seem to care (and maybe even celebrate) when they have relationships, vs. how much of a cardinal sin relationships seem to be in idol culture.

One thing I'll say is that the attitudes in this manga are about a decade old, which isn't a surprise since manga writers are typically 10 years behind trends due to story boarding and getting out of touch with mainstream culture as they get work and get older. Also add in the fact that manga and stories like this overstate the toxicness to deliberately make drama

These days, Japanese celebs have a much easier time being open with relationships. The newest generation of kids growing into adults are more open about this stuff, and the Heisei era of things is being phased out with more pro-relationships thinking the the current Reiwa era. Not saying there aren't extreme weirdos or that Japan has magically gotten over their sexual hang-ups (and neither of us in the West, too), but the outrage in this manga is amped up for dramatic effect.

As for Akari, I’m genuinely puzzled by how quickly people got attached to her. She’s far from perfect in my eyes. Maybe it’s just me, but I need more time to connect with a character.
Her thoughts, motivations, and actions are ones we can empathise with much more than Ayano. IDK man, maybe it's because we're not 13-year-old genius actors.

Maybe we're just Fumifumis deep down.

Frustrating chapter, but also frustrating comments so far, tbh.

As for the chapter, I hate the "He must be gay" line with a passion. If you're willing to establish the character as being especially arrogant or narcissistic then you can maybe pull it off, but otherwise you're missing a justification for why the character wouldn't go for the more obvious "He must not be into me" line of thought. You don't get to use character-believes-herself-to-be-hot (especially in a career where your looks are constantly called into question) or verbally acknowledges the size of her assets to be sizeable (thank goodness we didn't do this one this time) as a justification.

Then there's the part where Isshiki tells Akari that he'll come by, decides that it'd put himself and his family at risk but then doesn't let her know he won't be coming by. Extremely forced means of introducing drama. You can let him send her a message stating that he can't come, and then have her still be disappointed in him, but I guess that would make her look bad instead of Isshiki?

Then there's the comments calling Isshiki a coward for not making a clear choice between being with Akari romantically, or not. Like, if she confessed to him and then he doesn't answer, I'd get it, but she hasn't told him that she wants to be with him until she decides it won't work. He can't read minds. Like, let him know, give him some time to consider it and if he still remains mum, then you get to complain. From where I'm standing, other than not letting Akari know he's going to renege on his promise because his life is in danger, I don't see what Isshiki did wrong.

Apparently it's also very wrong that he was feeling good for helping his friend out when she was going through tough times. Like, he's supposed to be emotionless when he's helping others? Any form of altruism can be interpreted as an act of selfishness if feeling good about helping others is suspect.

It's like there's this assumption that Isshiki must have romantic feelings for Akari because... her looks? They get along? She romantically likes him? To loop things back to the first point, it feels like everyone is on the "He must be gay" wavelength or rather the "He must be a coward" wavelength, because why else wouldn't he choose to be with Akari? Maybe he just sees her as a friend. Maybe this is what he's been telling everyone all this time. Maybe, just maybe, he's just not that into her.

I think some of the people getting mad at Fumi are angry because what they thought would happen didn't happen. They call him a coward because they saw the opening for him to take things in a romantic direction, but he allowed that opportunity to pass him by.

If we take a step back, however, maybe he never interpreted her actions as an opening. Perhaps, even if he did, he wasn't interested in going there.

Not to mention how problematic it would've been for him to actually have a relationship with her. The events of this chapter pertaining to the leak cement this idea.

That said, I do think he is worth criticizing - just not without contextualizing how Akari is wrong or flawed herself. Him being cowardly or spineless is supported by events that precede this chapter (letting himself be walked all over and enduring the abuse, for instance). But that doesn't necessarily make everything he did up until this point without basis.
