Not dumb, just doesn't have full info on things.I hate it when good stories introduce dumb characters all of a sudden. The stereotypical greedy noble has literally nothing to gain by attacking a guy that's proven himself to be the strongest, and his excuse "he could seize the throne if he wanted" makes no sense precisely because he probably could do it, but has chosen not to anyway.
If he wants to usurp the throne then anything that can get into way of his plans is a threat. What you do with threats? Destroy it. Because Alan has fame and he is a noble then it needs to be done silently or in a way that won't connect it with him.
He knows exactly Alan is after the crown which doesn't make him stupid, rather clever instead.
Also king makes a good decision, because he counts on Alan's gratitude for helping him. In CK3 it's those who you appoint directly and give them title who are the most loyal, the older ones don't like the new kings and want to revolt 😉
