OniBarubary.. I hope you read this...
MAJOR SPOILER WARNING
She becomes the major evil in the world, bringing together the "demonic races" and creating a major war against humans. BUT...
And this is just my speculation, since she has met D, the self proclaimed "evil" administrator, I believe she does this to free the people of this world from Administrator influence. I, however, have not gotten far enough in the story to have any real evidence of this... I am inferring from what I have read and thwt I cannot believe thst she is inherently evil (regardless of her inability to feel remorse due to the effects of skills....)

@Aricitic You got part of it right
I keep spoilers to a minimum but there is a damn good reason for starting that war, any more would be a HUGE spoiler

@Tamed

essentially, in the original webnovel, the story actually split between two sections in time: The one with ms spider over here, and the stuff with the other students, which is like
a decade or so later than the spider portion
. The non-spider portion explains quite a bit about the spider portion and overall, ties everything together. Even
spidergirl is in the non-spider portion,
but you wouldn't know that until much, much later.

theShear, I assumed as much.
This isn't the type of story to have suffering for the pure sake of suffering...
Thank you for not spoiling the reason. But, out of curiosity, about what chapter do we find out?

@OniBarubary Don't worry, it keeps a number of the elements that you enjoyed. Gonna try and keep the spoilers to a minimum but there will still be some spoilers here:
Although the story does take a darker route, and as Aricitic said she does become, from a certain perspective, the big bad, she keeps her goofy personality and the story keeps its light hearted tone for most of it. It's just that it also has some pretty heavy moments on top of that. The uphill battle's between significantly superior foes will, however, all but disappear. I don't want to spoil why, but in essence its because all her major foes either pose a threat in some way other than combat prowess, are so massively beyond her that she can't even dream of ever directly fighting them, or in one case is a superior foe that she is constantly preparing for a possible confrontation with. That confrontation would probably be the uphill battle you are looking for, but it hasn't happened yet, even in the most recent chapters in the web novel. Also don't worry, she is still a literal spider to the end, even if maybe not quite in the way she seems now.

Also don't worry too much about this taking the Overlord route. I was initially hooked on Overlord, but by the end of the invaders of the great tomb arc I hated that shit with a passion. This story , unlike Overlord, will continue to have an interesting protagonist, a complex and likeable main cast, actual moral ambiguity, decent humor, an engaging plot line, and an interesting, fleshed out, and deep world.

@Aricitic If memory serves you get the reason in small bite sized chunks progressively through the 240-270ish chapter area (thats going by chapter numbers not the actual number of chapters btw). I think it was around the end of the Oni vs Oni arc that you first started getting major bits of info?

Will someone update the cover pic? It's from volume 4 but on the first page in this new chapter there's already a pic of volume 5 (in B&W but there should be a colored version somewhere).

@Aricitic @OniBarubary
Heavy spoilers, but one that will quell most of Oni's worries
You guys don't need to worry about that, Kumoko stays the same even when she becomes fully humanoid. Kumoko is not evil in any means, much on the contrary, she's actually heroic in that she is trying to save everyone, however she is utterly clueless about anything related to ethics and emotions(she's a spider, after all). Anything "bad"(which i don't consider as such) she does is out of ignorance to these matters or simply because there is literally no other way aroud it. She is oblivous to the concept of friendship and due to how she grew up her personal concept of family is twisted. She'll slowly change once she neets a real family member and she gets more allies. But at the end of the day her intentions are noble and she hates nobody but one "person".

Edit: @ConstantErasing Sorry I didn't notice your answer, still, my spoilers deal in somewhat different aspects compared to yours, it actually compliments them. And I don't know if you knew this but the new WN chapters have been translated but in a new website. I'm only found out now. New chapters go from 316 to 325 with one side story in the middle. Have a good read!

BloodySorcerer, thank you. I figured that was the case based on both the manga and the light novels.

Also, just to tattle a little, someone in the comments for this chapter thinks the side stories are "worthless."
In my opinion the story flows without them, BUT they give context to the story that we do not get without them...
I would add more but I am on break at work and... My break isn't long enough for me to type my view (intelligently) on a cellphone keypad...

@Aricitic @theShear @ConstantErasing @BloodySorcerer :

Actually, thanks a lot for that information. People complain about spoilers all the time but in situations like this where I'm hesitant about where a series might be going, hearing about what it does later and how you guys see it actually helps keep me interested and looking forward to reading it. Stuff you revealed does a lot to alleviate my worries about things.

@Aricitic I just add an @ symbol in the front of the name. Also I would agree that the side stories are valuable. The main S series of the side stories tends to be a bit dull, but even with that info it provides and the course of events is important, especially for later on in the story. Meanwhile some of the side story chapters, such as the one's from balto's perspective and the Great War chapters, are just as entertaining as the main story IMO. I'm kinda lamenting the manga's decision to skip the side stories, though with the glacial pace its already being released at (relative to what I want it to be at least) it's maybe for the better that they aren't. I'm really looking forward to the next couple chapters, after all if memory serves
taboo will be maxed out when she evolves
, and I wouldn't want to be left on a cliff hanger for that for a side story chapter, even if I understood it's importance (which you honestly don't at this point in the story if this is your first read of the series).

@BloodySorcerer Yep, I'm all caught up. I actually keep my eye on the raws rather than the translations so I know asap when a new chapter has been released. Then I check novel updates to for the translation. So far the most I've missed a new chapter by is about a week, and that was the first few chapters after this latest 3 month release drought. Also I'm going to disagree with you slightly on some of those spoilers:
Although I'd say you mostly hit the nail on the head with your depiction of Kumoko's character, I'd say shes a bit more gray than you make her out to be. She made it clear that she is willing to sacrifice the many for the few to grant the wishes of the people that matter most to her. She knowingly does what could easily be considered evil at times to fulfill that objective. She is kind, in her own way, but that kindness really only extends to the people close to her. She won't ignore someone suffering right in front of her, but has no compunctions about sacrificing countless numbers for the sake of what she considers a nobler goal. She is also utterly ruthless towards anyone opposing her. For a spider she shows a lot of typical human morally ambiguous behaviors. Also idk if hate is really the right word for that "person". Unless that person's name starts with P, then hate might be pretty accurate.

@OniBarubary Good to hear. The twists in this story are actually pretty well done so I try my best to avoid fully spoiling any of them, but I'm not gonna hold back spoilers if it means keeping someone's interest. This is easily my favorite isekai series and one of my favorite series period, so I try my best to get other people to give it a shot and maybe come to regard it as highly as I do.

Tamed, if you are referring to silvergraey7265's post about the web novel, then, no. It isn't a separate manga, it is the web based novel that the light novel is based on, the manga is based on the light novel.
The side stories in the web and light novels are an integral part of the story that subtly give background information like how virtually no human learns the skill she first learns because it is viewed as useless. It also explains why some skills are less or more expensive... Neither of these, among other things (like why she stated she was glad that she didn't eat the egg) has not, is not, and in some cases will never be explained in the main story. (But a lot of it is stated arbitrarily so it is easy to miss, honestly).

... And if that isn't what you were referring to... Sorry.

One of the better (well on it's way to best) isekai series manga I've read. Among those that focus on a bit of comedy, it is my 2nd favourite after Konosuba. Quite a refreshing change from the so many generic trope isekai stories there. Now where I can get my Kumo key chain ?.

I made an account, just so I could comment on this.

While I like the genre Isekai in general. This is by far, the best in use of it I've seen so far. It's extremely interesting to see the character start from basically nothing, and power up, it makes the story a lot more relatable, and a lot less bland than just being OP from the start. I hope this goes on for a long time, and maybe even gets an adaptation, I'd love to see this brought to the screen, if it retained the charm.

That also being said, this is one of like.. 3 magnas I've spent the time to fully read, so hopefully, the fact that I've actually invested time into reading the whole thing should show that it's well worth it.

this is remarkably well written. despite the fact that as of this comment there has been no (understandable) dialogue besides the MC's inner monologue the author keeps it fresh & interesting. cant wait to see where this goes!

The best isekai that i have seen so far (alongside overlord), the focus on one character is working pretty well so far and the struggles she passes are amazingly believable, i'm loving it. (Also, what's up with the missing chapters?)
