Right? I don't get the sudden love for her just because he fumbled his spaghetti. She's still not a great person IMO.
No one's arguing she's a great person tho. It's that mc was really being a bitch with this whole exchange. He's making her like some super evil woman even tho he barely knows her. Also lmao, Shizuki telling Hebikawa to stay away from Kusunoki says so much about him.

This really is crazy though. Like, this chapter didn't reveal anything new about Hebikawa. I don't understand how this suddenly changes people's opinions of her. She has been the same as she always has, shitty and two-faced. And then she's putting the blame on MC saying "he wasn't seeing her for who she is", which is shitty and two-faced.

I mean, when you're actively deceiving someone by treating them nicely when in reality you find them disgusting, how are you going to blame them and make them think it's their fault that they misunderstood that? Isn't this textbook gaslighting? What? Hello everyone? She doesn't owe MC anything obviously but she sure as hell cannot tell him he never saw her properly when she was actively deceiving him for her own benefit
I do kind of get what she's saying, though. MC has been thinking of her like she's his arch nemesis, like she deliberately did that to screw him over, and now she's come to his high school and he has to be really careful that she doesn't find him out cause she's gonna get him!! When really, the truth is, she never cared about him. What she did to him was bad, and it affect him really badly, but from her perspective it was just a minor thing, and she probably did it to other guys as well. He has made things worse for himself by fixating so much on her.

Those extreme reactions and trauma are not justified at all, like I said before, Shizuki needs to get his shit together
The problem with the trauma is that that's not something he can control. That's why it's trauma. If you wanna criticise that and say it's an overreaction, you have to criticise the author, since the author is the one who decided that he has that trauma. Trauma wouldn't be trauma if people could just decide to get over it.

Ah yes, teenage angst. Teenage angst is when you’re traumatized from being isolated and mocked by your peers during some of the most important developmental years of your life and the ONE person that treated you like a person and dared to think of as a friend proceeds to insult and demean you in front of her friends, revealing that you were just a step stone to her social reputation all while looking you dead in the eye as she says it.
Kusunoki isn't responsible for his social and mental well-being. He drove himself into a corner all by himself. Social skills aren't rocket science. If you don't have any friends, the problem is inside, not outside.

It literally says nothing about him whatsoever lmafo you can’t genuinely be trying to run the ‘he’s worse than hebikawa’ line he’s just trying to protect his friend from a spiteful person who doesn’t actually like her ( the exact same situation he went through with her)

I don't know who you're replying to cuz it surely isn't me. 1) I never mentioned Kusunoki in any of this nor said she's responsible for anything. 2) Surely you aren't trying to make the argument that it's somehow his fault that people bullied/made fun of him for checks notes reading manga and being a bit fat? 3) How does his lack of social skills justify Hebikawa's behavior against him? Does being socially awkward mean he deserves to be manipulated and taken advantage of?

The reason I think a lot of people are taking a softer stance towards Hebikawa now is that the trauma-inducing event as depicted in this chapter looks ridiculous in context. Shizuki's strongest memory of her is essentially her saying "hi." It just reads as absurd when you look back on the lines and lines of dialogue where he portrays her as some kind of scheming puppet master.

That this major plot point was literally just one off-hand comment from at best an acquaintance really lowers the stakes here. Nowhere is it implied that she even tried to make him fall in love with her. She might have been aware of his feelings, but from what we're shown, they were just on speaking terms when she broke things off.

Not to say Shizuki's trauma would be invalid or anything, just that the way he talks about it is completely at odds with what we're shown and how Hebikawa remembers and talks about it.

Kusunoki is such a good girl! She definitely came because she could tell something was off and it was bothering her all day.

Blackmail using the fact that he used to be fat?
I'll chalk it up to teenage insecurity.
Not that specifically but just that he was a loser. I think you forget how teenagers are. It would be easy for a popular girl to devastate a normal guy's social life by bringing it up and joking about it in front of everyone

A way to surpass an irrational fear is having the shocking reality that your fear is irrational throw at your face. (real life experience when I was a teen)

The point I'm trying to make is that she was nice to him to keep up appearances but nothing she did was overtly hostile or malicious; her comment that crushed his feelings was callous indifference at worst. Him falling in love with her and getting sad about it was entirely his own doing. It's no different from the cashier at your grocery store smiling and being nice to you every week and feeling devastated when you learn she's married and does not in fact think about you at all outside of the 2 minute interactions you have at her job.
But it's the cashier's job to be courteous to you. In Hebikawa's case, she had not such obligations, to him or to some third-party. The obligation she did have was to not take advantage of his vulnerability like that. If she had just left him alone when she wasn't interested in him in the first place, Shizuki wouldn't still be recoiling from the trauma.

Idk man I have a lot to say but I'll just say this. I still don't trust her but is an interesting character. Shizuki has a lot to work on but his pain is understandable. Kusunoki is...well Kusunoki. I just think people a to quick to flip flop. I think I am down on the snake because I am not a big fan of the schemer type characters.

You are 100% right about Shizuki demanding Hebikawa to stay away from Kusunoki. There's no evidence, that he knows of, of bad intentions. But I get his feeling. It real muddy.

Take advantage how though? Like she didn't scam him out of money or pressure him into doing errands for her or really get anything out of it other than the nebulous "make myself look better" by....being fake nice to him? If he had never walked in on that conversation there would have been no actual harm done. It's shitty but relatively low on the scale. Agree that she should've just left him alone, but IMO her biggest slight here is talking shit about him publicly after faking being nice, not the faking itself. Take that away and you're left with a dude developing a crush on someone just because they're pleasant during small talk and getting upset when he realizes it doesn't mean anything.

Ahhh~ Hebi-sama smiled a lot today! 🥰

Dude got indirect rejection and created a self inflicted trauma. Afawk Hebikawa is just being nice to him to up her own social status quo, no direct harm or bullying done. Though it looks on one panel she knows he's listening to them and directly-indirectly hurt him.

I hope Hebi and Kusonoki gets to be really good friends. Imo base on previous chapter it's probably Kusonoki is the person that Hebikawa aspires to be.
