If memory serves, Suirei uses the "resurrection elixir" to make the village's children appear to be dead at the conclusion of the coup, and Jinshi arranges that she and the children are taken into the protective custody of Aduo, since Suirei is the illegitimate granddaughter of the Previous Emperor. The "brat" ends up with amnesia and partial paralysis as a consequence of the medicine, and Maomao ends up getting him a job at the Verdigris House.

Since she's considered an illegitimate child by the Big Bitch, I guess it would be the equivalent of denying Sui Ren her father's family name, and she's forced to use her mother's family name instead. It's still pretty common these days, even in the US.

Well yeah, that much is obvious, but the thing about Chinese culture is that naming a kid after someone isn’t just something that’s not done, it’s something that’s actively avoided. People can get tetchy, even if it’s written with a different character, if the name sounds alike to someone else in the same family. There’s a lot of importance on how you address someone, like, you can’t just simply call them by their name, so using that same name to name their child is a major disrespect (or so I’ve read).

So I imagine that’s it’s probably some sort of massive insult to yoink another kid’s name to give to your own, but it also probably means that her own kid wasn’t as important enough to her than the mother’s petty revenge, because when a Chinese parent names their child, it’s supposed to be reflective of how they imagine their kid’s life to be In the future.

I wonder what are the cultural implications of taking one kid’s name to give to another kid. I know that even just naming a kid after someone is a big no-no in Chinese culture, but don’t have enough sense of the culture to fully grasp all the implications of outright stealing a name.

If I understand correctly, it's more or less denying that person's humanity, by treating the name as unused and therefore available. Which is why it's rude as hell, if not worse.

This is only my interpretation but far from being only a quirky and comedic carelessness or disinterest about something others would find important and exciting, I think Mao Mao avoids thinking about it because of what happened between her mother and father.

For the lowborn, nothing good comes from being around nobles and their affairs. If shit hits the fan, as it tends to do with them, they're the ones that are in a vulnerable position and will get hurt. Whether the noble that likes them very much and would never hurt them intentionally, likes it or not. Their lives are riddled with concerns that supercede individual ones.

Lakan couldn't refuse a prestigious posting, and it ruined his love's life.

And given how much danger she was exposed already around Jin shi, or even the nice Gyokuyou, it's a very reasonable fear to wonder what would happen if they ever get together. She'd just upgrade from collateral damage to active target.

It sucks for everyone involved, but this is something one should consider when thinking about cozying up with royals. Only naive girls dream about becoming a princess or queen; the women that are know once it's too late it's more a burden than a blessing.

Case in point, any woman making the mistake to join the Windsors or the Saud family irl, or these two chapters, with what happens when the worst kind of noble lays eyes on a new lowborn they can hurt.

But ~ let's ignore that. I'm sure love will prevail! Not to mention Jinshi's frog- 😤
