Nobles Oblige? Sure I guess that makes sense for his future redemption story, but it is still a sketchy explanation. "I suddenly woke up and realized I have responsibilities!" That is justification, not motivation.
People don't usually make grand, life changing, choices with out a serious motivating event. (like trauma, or near death event)
Why not just say he had a nightmare of his future arrogant self, hated by all, back stabbed with no one to care. And an epiphany of "I don't want to end up like that". (kinda like the ghost of Christmas future.)
