Damn, cya Holo. Hope you get through just fine. Wonder if MD will get more takedown notices.

@Pernodi in this case the literal artist wants to be separated from their work. I think this is worth respecting, certainly a better reason than the typical DMCA request.

Appreciate the work Holo. Still remember seeing this site first come up after batoto's shutdown; quite the difference since then.

As for the DMCA, at least not everything was taken down all the time like on batoto. Which, in hindsight, most were almost assuredly fake since many specific scanlation sites chugged on raking in the money. But over time, a portion of said specific sites finally do get taken down. So who knows.

As for the complaints about the series taken down specifically, it's a shame, time to put in some effort on obtaining free stuff like with other forms of entertainment. And still less effort than something like games or movies.

I do personally believe scanlations are still a grey area legally, but in practical terms, it's just a matter of potential gain. The practical legality of something depends on how much time, effort, and money one is willing to dedicate to enforce it. Though I suppose Act Age being taken down is more to avoid potential losses, and not exclusively of the monetary kind.

Do the site have a list of the title being restricted? I bookmark too many title to check one by one.

I'd suggest backing up the series and at minimum allowing the translators the ability to offload their data in a timely fashion to host elsewhere for the time being.

I subscribe to Viz's Weekly Shonen Jump, but other younger readers may not be able to in restricted countries/regions

Likewise, I'll try to backup those titles myself before midnight.

Upon further consideration, @Kafka, unless there is such legal risk that this is all that is possible, offering 5 business days or a week for the takedown seems reasonable as now the servers are so excessively overloaded that Tachiyomi and Firefox are acting like MangaDex is under a DDOS attack.

If there exists a means, delay for 5 to 7 business days would seem reasonable to stem the traffic flow considering how people seem to be crashing the site to get these comics.

Unless someone wants to upload them all at Bato or elsewhere, or host them temporarily, until people can stem the tide here, it would seem reasonable to delay given the site is acting (for me) wrse than ever. This is especially telling given all of the bandwidth and server upgrades recently.

I can't even get Tachiyomi to recognize chapters now.

If there is a way to delay temporarily citing the damage to service and how the servers are crashing, I'd go with that given how that appears to be what is going on. Less than 24/hours after this notice and suddenly the site is freezing and inaccessible.

Also, my apologies. The page froze and posted this comment before it was completed.

What the fuck...? Did we even read the same argument?

My reasoning as to why Mangadex shouldn’t take titles down in circumstances like this, is that they’re setting a bad precedent that they’ll take down and licensed title once a distributor threatens them. The Anime Industry is worth about $20B USD. And big companies are gonna start to get on-board the anime train and fire out legal threats to sites like Mangadex.

If they continue to cave into demands like these, there’ll be nothing left except unlicensed manga.
You’re also forgetting that, at the drop of a pin. A Japanese distributor can easily send a takedown to unlicensed series for use of the manga raws. Are they going to accept those to?

We’re not talking about any-other sites or inspiring change here. I have a Viz shonen jump subscription. The non-volume raws are always terrible quality, and feature stiff. Poorly localised translations.

I expect Mangadex to be a place where I can read fan-translations. Not a place where you can’t read your favourite new manga series that was being done by a group because Viz licensed it and are getting Jennifer Challenger’s retarded cousin to translate it.

bato.to is irrelevant here, and people who want to read new popular manga series make up the majority of this sites traffic.

Again, it’s not about removing a few series to keep the site running. It’s about bending over whenever Viz-sama or any other big company tells them to remove a series.

@Hebiwoku @xyzzy

I thought one primary reason for anonymous donations in crypto was and distributed servers for fan translation aggregation was partly to prevent this sort of situation? It's also because the more traditional means are blocked and would shut them down (e.g. PayPal).

Likewise, it's easy for us to comment when we aren't the ones taking the heat (legally). If the devs are in places where they are protected, that's one thing, but if they can be arrested, then I could understand why they might not want to support things.

Likewise, what happened to these outfits hiring on the cheap the best crops of fan translation on fansubs? I thought that was a thing at some point?

In any event, Bato is more about providing an alternative. Other comics like My Wife is the/a Demon Queen was C&D by the fan team and it was purged from MangaDex by the translation team. Now, it only exists elsewhere in full. This is not the first.

There needs to be more transparency for the readership on how C&D will be handled, and likewise, means to prevent erasure. What happens if we have a repeat of Toykopop or other cites vanishing like with the great anime crashes of the 2000s?!

I lost valid licenses because of the closures—anime that I paid licensing for that disappeared when the Copy Protection hosting servers vanished, thereby leaving me with no access/money flushed.

Likewise, many of these Japanese firms wish to outlaw used book sales. There were attempts are reported in Techdirt that the policy was to move Congress to outlaw the sale of used books because the transfer of the usage licenses was illegal. You don't own the content, merely a license to use that can be revoked at any time.

What happened to the scanlation community hactavist anarchist roots?

I don't care about which manga are being C&D'ed and whatnot, but right now Mangadex is nigh-unusable. Is something going to be done about the server overload issues? Its not a DDoS since Mangadex is under Cloudflare protections, and the site would be giving Cloudflare errors instead of the constant 504 errors, Database errors, language unknown errors, and chapter has no pages errors.

Something I noticed with a lot of companies, organizations...etc, is that at some point, it has grown large to a certain extent that the boss can finally stop driving in the driver's seat after constantly being on the road...and take a much needed rest in the back seat when the org is successful enough that it can entirely run and continue on by itself, like a true self-driving car. That is a sign of success in it's own right, and something to be proud of accomplishing in my opinion.

Happy retirement riding off into the sunset, and good luck to your future both on and offline. None of us would be here without you, and thank you for your years of dedicated service to the community.

@Jigoral
Don't worry, it should be over by tomorrow (or not, i'm not a dev). It won't last long, that's what i'm saying.

@Jigoral The current issues are caused due to a reboot of the webserver. The (I assume) webserver cache was wiped during this reboot and the site can't handle the traffic until it is rebuilt. Plykiya stated in discord that the site will not return to reasonable performance for a day, so we are all going to have to wait.
