I get that demons are the evils that massacred his town. It wouldn't be absurd if he did nothing. But the demon princess has done nothing so far to deserve the treatment during the tea party. This isn't a court where the crimes of the demon race are being considered.

I will guess that, when she was a kid, the princess one day fled the demon country and went to the hero's village or she was kidnapped and brought there. Somehow she met him and he helped her, which led to her falling in love with him. Be it the kidnapping, or something else happened that made the demon king get enraged and order the village to be wiped out. The hero never knew that she was the demon princess and still thinks to this day that she was killed with the rest of his village.

I remember the introduction saying that the war started with the destruction of one village, which was most likely the hero's village.
