What, have you never heard of intergalatic orphan cage fights? It is basically cock fighting except with poor and or indebted, orphaned children. You can make big money betting on the winner.

Well, it is either that or pod racing. Not many intergalactic events allow orphans to compete for prize money.

?????

The MC can pay her dumb debt in full, and he barely worked for the money considering what he did to get it tho. Slapping extra charges on him would be in bad taste, although I understand some dirty companies would do it.

@JavelinJoe arguably, neither of your examples let the orphan compete for the prize money, the "sponsor" that puts them into the competition is the one that wins, plus whatever you bet.

@Warmuffin who says there hasn't? But if you can't afford to pay for your living expenses, you don't have the cash to invest in good enough weapons/training to beat out the powers that be. If you do have those already you become a pirate or mercenary.

@Talismaster It doesn't matter how MC got his money, or that MC 'showed' him. In the end, the debt collector is the one that profits and MC is the one that loses out. The only thing MC 'won' is some worthless pride over a dumb 'victory' that the debt collector will just lol and forget the moment MC steps out of the building, afterall, he already got MC's money.

Also, MC only have enough for himself to live without doing anything for 4 decades. If he decided to do anything, it'll dig into his savings more, and with his occupation, who knows if his ship will explode in the next job, and now a portion of that is going to disappear for some stranger that he'd met 5min ago.

Purely from a narrative or story viewpoint, why have money if you’re not going to use it?

It doesn’t matter if the debt collector has the money or not. The author clearly gave the MC more than enough money needed to settle the debt, with little effort required to achieve that amount of money. So the debt collector is a scumbag, who cares? As long as they no longer remain antagonistic, and stays out of his life, there’s no need to be upset.

Even if he gets into more debt, he has the tools and money required to acquire more. Since this is an isekai, I’m inclined to believe that no matter what, he won’t end up in the third sector slums or whatnot.

I understand the argument you’re going for, but when the author gives the MC the skills for success, the tools for success, and the enough money to live easily, why the hell should he be worried about anything? Why should we be expected to worry about him? Even if he risks his money, even if he risks his ship, by getting into trouble, that’s what heroes do. They overcome hardship, whether or not it’s actually hard for them.

It’s basic isekai tier shit to me. You don’t see people cry about MCs giving money to slave traders and helping the slave industry when they buy their first companion. You see more complaints about why slavery is par for the course with isekai. This paying off the debt is practically the same thing, just modernized and changed for sci-fi. By settling her debt, she’ll join his ship, and by extension, harem. It’s the act of acquiring a female party member by the extremely easy means of using excessive amounts of money and by doing so, making her wet because he’s so nice by doing so, and kindness is so foreign to these people. Geez. He’s basically Satou from Death March. Or any over overly rich MC that goes around buying slaves in any isekai. It’s the same shit, but slightly reskinned.

Edit:
Tldr, if the story devolves to “gain money, lose money, acquire waifu, repeat”, there’s no point in being mad over losing money. That’s just the plot. Once he’s acquired the waifus he needs from the space station/colony, he can fuck off or try a take over. Whatever.

@Talismaster As you mentioned, from a narrative/story viewpoint, I agree with you, but we're on completely different lanes. My comment is directed at your reply to MonkeyMagic, which is regarding the physiological behaviour and action of the character, rather than how the author is pushing his story forward.

That’s fair. In which case I’ll say that because of the direction of the story and how unimportant the debt collector may be, a little snubbing and showing off is all you need to get back at that kind of ass, especially if they’re just going to be a one-time NPC appearance sort.

Based on what novels I’ve read, Japanese, and various Chinese seem to enjoy that kind of casual one-upping or comeuppance.

@Talismaster You make a lot of good points. This story doesn't seem to veer much from the standard isekai tropes, with the exception of the setting. There's a lot less sci-fi isekai, not that this series reads that much different from a fantasy one. SPACE elves instead of regular ones.

500,000 enel is nothing compared to what most Elites earn doing hunting and mining jobs.

Oh, and don't forget that this is an Empire, not a Federation.

Difference being one is a centralized state ruling over others and the other is made up of various states that have their own power in play.

I don't really buy that "it's a common occurrence for workers to pay for work-accidents".
If that was the norm, who the fark would even work for these people? I can only buy that, if these stations are erected illegally, by gangs or pirates, and thus if you work there, it's because you have nowhere to go, and you have no rights.

TLDR: I don't' buy that "making the workers pay for work accidents" is the "norm". For the very least, it should only be "the norm" in places that operate illegally.
P.S: Heck, even if it is "the norm", it pushes such an authoritarian, dystopian living conditions, that it actively detracts from this "light-hearted isekai story". I feel like Japs sometimes forget that they're not meant to write Xianxia stories, in which the MC is expected to crush literally anything and everything, if only he has enough steroids.

@Solipsist

It's a detached space colony with high mercenary and trade traffic.

It's also most likely Military-managed.

not only do they (possibly) not have life insurance, health insurance and employee benefits (other than what we've heard for mercenaries); but they have strict tax and high living standard requirements.

The nearest this colony can be is : Imperial, State Capitalist, possible Authoritarian rule and a very High level of Corruption (as instated with bribery from the guards and having some kind of caste system)

By any means, even if this is Sci-Fi, it has a very medieval-like society.

Most likely Oligarchy due to the power structure.

@panzerkampfwagyu I often wonder why we're societally degenerating at this very moment.
What's dumb here is that there's no reason for her to not just get on his ship and leave for some place where residency doesn't come with absurd inherited debts. This station sucks, and a new identity is probably a hell of a lot cheaper than 500k.
