Whatever it is Seto does to exorcise spirits, it relies on these "gaps", the "margins" in definition and categorization, the "holes" in a spirits disguise.
The part about crossing the barrier could simply be about preventing their influence on the real world, ...or it could be worry about something that may happen if a definition manages to be solid enough that there's no gaps.
But I'm probably reading too much into that, and it's just the former.

...And then there's whatever the fuck Romm is talking about with modding bugs out.
Yeah, he might be saying that they still haven’t really “crossed the barrier” if ONLY people with a spiritual sense can see them. Maybe that’s why he isn’t bothered by entities like that skull butler? Especially since it seemed to be talking to his “entourage.” The other side going about its own business isn’t bad (spirits talking to other spirits is fine), but once they start weighing on or touching people without spirit sense, then they’re a real problem?
Maybe in the past, he let something grow until it started really “crossing back over.”

It could also be related to the way he goes about things, drawing a firm line between natural and supernatural. It makes sense in a way, it’s a dangerous business and he doesn’t have the subtle senses that the others do (Mieruko meanwhile struggles to distinguish the living from the dead…). He needs there to be a gap between the two in order to define which to protect and which to exterminate?

Don't worry Miko, I don't understand a damn thing either. Well, besides the fact that this ojisan is really creepy and I'm afraid of him too.
That's because it was gobbledygook - a bunch of words strung together pretending to mean something, but which actually has no meaning.

Speaking of explaining stuff...

I'll point out that the author has yet to explain anything about the wider world of spirits and spiritualists. Is there some sort of governing organization? Are there rules? Or is everything just individual spiritualists doing their own thing (sometimes with cooperation from others).

And what is "middle aged man"? Miko asked... and got no (real) answer.

And how about explicitly saying "stay the hell out of my house, asshole!" (At least she told her Mom and bro to keep him out, but is she opening the back door by letting those creepy things "guard" her?)

And BTW, how about: "Can/should I talk to my Dad? And how about doghorseghost? It seems cool."

I guess...

Seto: I once failed to act when I should have, and as a consequence someone died. I vowed to never make that mistake again.

Reader: You're an adult, so you're well aware that there are two types of errors, right? 1: Failing to act when you should have. 2: Acting when you should not have.

Seto: ... Huh? ... ... I made a vow.

Reader: A vow to be an idiot apparently. ... I blame the author.

,,,

Reader: Also, BTW... Your vow was always to take action? Yet you took no action in regards to the shrine. And now you're complaining that Miko, Romm and Mitsuki did take action there.

Seto: ... What are you saying? I don't understand.

Good to know I wasn't the only one baffled by Seto and Romm's "explanations". I wonder how Pii-chan will react to Miko's new security detail. I can't imagine it's going to be pretty.

As for the Horse Skull butler, in his previous apparition (chapter 28), he was taking stray ghosts loitering in the restaurant and feeding them to one of those mouth "things" that seem to be a way for ghosts to finally pass away. I assume he was ready to do the same thing to Seto's helpers until he got tricked into thinking they were customers.

What if it's that giant thing that came out of the mountain after they got rid of the "god" in there, is what is after Miko? It's form has no definition because it's above what you can see, so your mind perceives it as something you potentially fear, or see as a threat.
For all we know the odd looking man has some relation to what killed her father?

Can't be, as we saw in the family photo album from Ch. 50.2 the Middle-Aged Man has been stalking Miko (or her family) since at least she was little well before she ever visited the mountain.

Love the Ghost Body Guards, hope they are actually more help that hindrance.
I can imagine them being really clutch in a lot of scenarios poor Miruko keeps finding herself in but then also they might take a swing at Octopus friend or some of the few rare good ghosts that we've seen.
Also honestly when it comes to ghost designs these guys are like some of the least creepy ones so I think I presonally could live with this lol.
Also if they are actually able to communicate like in that last pannel, and it is of course not just gibberish, that would be really cool!
Excited to see where this goes!

Rapehorse a gigachad as always :chad:

Seto's explanation (at least the important part to focus on in my opinion) is basically that spirits look different to everyone, so you don't always know what they are. That's why he just kills em for the most part.

Rom's is that spirits have different issues/causes (like bugs in a program) that you take care of in different ways (like how mods for texture improvements aren't the same as patching in a better inventory system, or correcting a broken code that causes the game to crash in a certain location). Basically - some ghosts you violently exercise, some you help pass on, & some are just always there & you become bros with like Pii-chan & Rapehorse.

His "explanation" was so bizarre made me wonder if we were going full Otherside Picnic mode and we were just watching him drag everyone through the interstitial space in real time lol
please leave her alone UBL-san, she's having enough trouble already without needing to start carrying a bag of bolts and a gun at all times as well!
Definitely reminded me of Otherside Picnic.

The horse is the MVP of this chapter. Imagine how Miko would feel if Seto unexist her father infront of her, and what the horse would do to them all. The horse and father is the family/house guardian.

  • At last now I'm sure Miko's father's ghost pet is a LLama-like (with emo hairstyle) ghost
  • Rom (my favorite char) starts to speak reflecting his name, ROM = Read Only Memory
  • Now my princess, Miko, is being guarded by those entities, looks badass!

Love reading all these digferent kinds of explanations of the gobbeldygook that Seto said. I did however notice a couple that didnt fully add up for me so imma throw in my thoughts as well:

When Seto talks about the world being like a folded up map, he speaks about a concept that is similar to the wormhole theory. if you bend space until it is folded together, distant points get layered over each other and become somewhat "one" or connected, existing in the same place at the same time. In short, the "spirit realm" and reality exist in the same place, layered on top of each other, slightly shifted and distorted. The reason someone can see ghosts in that sense might be due to a 3rd factor, the "power", like shining light behind two sheets of paper so you can see whats on the lower one.

And when he talks about how he deals with those ghosts, he explains how he stands in the gaps. "Margins" are deviations of what something is supposed to be. So, when he says "as long as margins exist" he means, as long as the spirits are not fully lining up with reality they cant cross over and thus have less to no influence over it.

Now, with what he says about what spirits are, others already have brought it to a pretty good point. By mentioning quantum physics and all that gobbeldygook, we can etablish that ghosts, as soon as observed, change what they are depending on the viewpoint you have similar to how light can be both a wavelength and a particle. And when they happen to overlap with a human, their wavelength can have direct influence over the signals (thoughts) in the brain. Think the indifference you hear when you have your phone lying next to your speakers and a call comes in.

Man, i love theorising stuff like that. Like deep diving into the good ol Dark Souls Lore.
