So many side ships just mogging the main ships recently

Misato and Konishikawa is such a boring, go nowhere pairing that they have to inject actually well developed characters every now and then to keep people hooked. From the moment Kida and Fujiwada were paired together they've been the highlight of the story and it isn't even close.

The author cares so little for the main ship's progression that they hard cut to something completely irrelevant after the bombshell that was Konishikawa meeting his Ex-Fiancé. Seriously, I'm shocked nobody brought it up last chapter when it just randomly focuses on Misato unintentionally rizzing up another female co-worker, a character who was only just that moment introduced mind you. Zero build up, zero relevance.

Even if you ignore that Kida and Fujiwada also have better chemistry than Misato and Konishikawa, the mere fact that their relationship progression makes more sense and is more naturally paced than the main pair shows the author is capable of writing an actual good story; they just choose not to. I'm pretty sure Fujiwada is doomed in that regard as well because Kida doesn't seem to view her romantically at all but even THAT would make for better story telling if Kida lets her down responsibly and they continue to get along as coworkers/friends. Would make a good parallel to Misato and Konishikawa.

Misato and Konishikawa are the "GloomyXConfident" trope that's also an age gap trope, but Konishikawa has been so Gloomy for so long that I started rooting against him. It's one thing for a teenager to have a "come to self-acceptance" moment and get the girl, but this is a ~50-year-old man. If he hasn't figured it out yet, why would he? Misato berating him isn't endearing, it's self-indulgent. It's like he's meant to fall for the first big-boobed woman who shows interest in him.

The confrontation with his ex just made him look bad. He reverted back to childish bickering, reliving a twenty-year-old argument. Not an attractive quality in a man. She likes him because he's a good manager, but she also nags his management style? It doesn't make sense. When they do finally get together, I wonder if it will feel believable. Maybe it works because they're both immature and annoying.

Kida and Fujiwara is... fine? He was a jaded slacker, he got motivated again and now he's a good mentor, and she gets rizzed by it? That's about it. Three characteristics are a pastiche, not a developed character arc. But at least it's not confounding like the main couple.

I guess I didn't realize how off the rails this story has gone. I don't feel ready to drop it. Maybe it's because I'm 43 chapters in and I want to get my money's worth. Maybe I should reread to remind myself when I hit follow in the first place.
