it's gonna be pretty hard to self-insert once you know Satou's backstory, but really the author wanted Satou and the rest of the characters to be seen as actual people living their own lives with their own problems instead of a wish fulfillment self insert character
Can someone minor spoil why he's different than a self insert? Curious what y'all mean by that

Jokes on him, I exclusively self insert with well rounded characters that actually have a personality, hobbies and a social life before meeting their love interest!
Without spoiling, I'll say there's one thing in particular that makes him hard to relate to. Btw don't read the spoiler above this comment

How is he in the LN?
while Hajime and Chinatsu resemble their Ln counterpart Shinji and Kana look quite different. personalitywise though he's the exact same as the LN. also the clothes they wear on first appearance is different. Also it's a 2 v2 as Shinji and Hajime team up with each other instead of playing against each other, with Shinji telling hajime to show off in front of Chinatsu but he also states he'll show up Hajime because Kana is also watching.

Ooooohhh. You meant in appearance. Given it's an LN I defaulted to there being a difference regarding his characterization.

Perhaps the mangaka wanted him to more convincingly fulfill that "delinquent" look.

It's difficult to self-insert as an orphan who had to make the decision to pull the plug on his little sister. Not impossible, but difficult.
Oh damn!

As an aside it does tickle me that a self insert is seen as someone that's supposed to be basically boring af with no actual redeeming qualities outside of being passively pleasant in manga with no real emotional baggage.

My God, MC isn't some traumatized kid but is mature enough to have his personal life and work/school life separate from each other. Say it ain't so

Thanks for the tl!

I found this today and got to see there are no more chapters yet 😭. Really enjoying their dynamic. The pacing is good and we get to see both of them as full characters, not just the guy. Definitely looking forward to learning more about his situation and why he lives alone

there's a reason why he feels so mature compared to the others his age
he was and is still somewhat traumatized by what he did and went through, but he had help. his uncle really helped him adapt to the situation and survive during that time. he finally comes to terms with everything that has happened and no longer feels guilty about having to make the choice to pull the plug on his sister, after confiding with Chinatsu in the near future where they both expose themselves to each other not holding back and comforting each other about their respective pasts

To people that asked a couple of chapters ago why such decision is fallen to middle school boy, the hospital has not been able to contact his uncle due to the nature of his work and he was the last relative left with connection to Hajime's sister, Mio, as the same accident already took their Mom and Dad's lives. I still think Hajime saying "Please let her go. She doesn't like being in pain" is really soul-crushing to read.

(Oh, specific nature of his uncle's work would come back to be beneficial to our leads later, too)

After that, yeah. His uncle once heard the news did everything he could to bring Hajime back to his feet. It feels like he is the 'underperforming' in class for the first 3 chapters, but Chinatsu will quickly learn that Hajime's 'well-put together' is quite an understatement. Our man takes quite a lot of subsequent actions you don't really see normal high schooler do to get together with her.

At later stages, Chinatsu often wonders if she does enough in the relationship to be of equal to him, but again, in high schooler's perpective, Hajime's influence on Chinatsu also make her quite ahead of her peers in a lot of ways, too. They really suit each other at the end of their arc before the story shift focus to their peers.

WAIT what do you mean the main character actually has friends and minds his own life and has hobbies and ...

I was SO expecting the common route of ex-player that will show the entire school he is very good in a random sports day.

But actually he still plays and is friends with one of the popular guys in school but who cares yk about these popular stuff. This is very good
