Dropped after ch.10. Japan is retarded here. They go full WW2 psycho killing spree, without trying to negotiate with the enemy nation. It's like they've sent diplomats to the first freaking country they met and gave 0 shits about the entire freaking world and any other nation for no F-ing reason! In other words, instead of revealing their superior might or the intention to be peaceful, they hide behind the curtain and use excuses to commit war-crimes and kill thousands (like dropping leaflets before "nuking" an entire army - as if they had a reason to believe the "fictional" Japan had that kind of "fictional" weapons). It also makes me cringe how the Japs are always seen smiling. Is this some Imperialist Japan-porn?

These types of stories are actually a story genre in a Japanese online story writing site Shousetsuka ni Narou. Its a genre called 地球なめんなファンタジー. A rough translation is 'Don't underestimate earth fantasy.' where modern nations destroy barbaric medieval nations. Its typically written by some far right nationalists. one such example of these stories in Gate.

why is everyone complaining about war crimes and shit, so it would be better if us was the country in the story, in my opinion no because us has also done some shit, search it up some fucked up shit?.everything related to humans is just war and violence so why are people talking about this moral code shit when nobody actually cares, they just want a puffed up moral high ground. Last thing we read this stuff because it appeals to humans(toy soldiers?). human love to break shit and 强奸。

@TakashiKaiyou ikr the Japanese engagements in this is exactly the same as how the US military proceeds with engagements because their ROE is based on our own. The only real issues I have with their ROE is that while "defending" the castle in Ejei they engaged an enemy force prior to an actual hostile action by said force which is not along the lines of peace keeping ROE. The passive thing to do would likely have been to have a "show of force" by firing a warning volley of their armaments to show what they are capable of. The enemy would probably attack anyways but it would have been the "proper" way to do it.

@Golliboy True. In addition, humans always say stuff like "well if it were me..." etc. etc. not realising that is automatically judgemental and has no truth. It's easy for us to say we would kill someone or go to war but when it comes down to it only a small number of soldiers even fire a bullet and even less kill. But we will be consumers and seeing one side absolutely decimated the other side is well enjoyable? (don't know if this is the right word). Not many countries downsize military unless forced to. Not many countries would just get rid of their entire combat-capable aircraft(NZ) well I guess I'm lucky to live in such a country but I might get drafted by other countries(Germany and China) that would kinda suck.

@TakashiKaiyou I would hate to be drafted, tbh depending on the justification of such a war that would demand my country to reinstate the draft I'd disappear if I had to. Most people can barely kill an animal that bleeds, let alone another animal that is sentient, speaks, and has a face that may remind you of someone. To me these kinds of series are enjoyable because it's kind of funny seeing how old world arrogance can lead to their own demise, however I know just as well that someone 100+ years in the future would laugh at the same arrogance we have about our military might today. Peace is a beautiful thing, but if people wanted peace, we wouldn't have wars to begin with. Pride, greed, and arrogance drive the war machine but it's fueled by the blood of the innocent. I think the TV series M*A*S*H* really sums up how meaningless war really is when one of its character says "War isn't hell, war is war and hell is hell, and of the two war is a lot worse...There are no innocent bystanders in hell, but war is chock full of them..."

I'm reading a (light?) novel series where one character is a 900 years old loli elf. She grew up hearing and reading about epic adventures and battles against demon lords, but her world has been at peace for as long as she has lived. She understands importance of peace, but she also wants to experience the epic tales she has read about. And so she decides to go to another world (with no way for home) where demon lord with immense power toys with the people. And she ends up in Tokyo.
"Demon lord" in question is the protagonist, who has telekinesis superpower, has trained with it to level OP with expectation to be called to secret organization to fight supernatural threats. When it didn't happen and he found himself living normal life as an overworked salaryman, he got an idea to create secret organization himself AND supernatural threats to fight against.

Is here anyone who don't understand/sympathize with these characters? I kinda understand them, but I rather keep my peace with manga and war games than experience Portland or real war.

They say when you civilization gets advanced enough your technology seems like magic . But what if your civilization started with the basic forms of magic but never went any further with it since it was better than there technology they had when they got the magic. At that point that "magic" would be like trowing a torch at a tank and thinking burning some of the paint is damage.

I'm just curious what metals made up the alloy for the shield that deflected machine gun bullets.

The comments here are so serious that I'm afraid of interrupting this flow, but here I am interrupting it anyway.
That sexual violence really pains my heart, but I understand it's a necessary plot in this story to give a reason for the JSDF to act (eventhough they could've opted to show mass massacre). I just hope the assaulters get what they deserved, eventhough this is fictional.

Basically, the Japanese version of Island in the Sea of Time.

Slightly inaccurate, considering that in IitSoT it was only the island of Nantucket (a seasonal resort destination and not an entire modern industrialized nation) and that was a world of circa 1000BCE, not a high-fantasy Middle Ages.

Bruh, that description, tho... F&#% my nit-pickery, whoever wrote it speaks my language and deserves a cookie.

LOL, JSDF/Imperial Japan propaganda, wrong, this story is more like "Modern Japan is better than expies of past countries, especially
past versions of Japan
" propaganda. I mean, the final boss nation is an expy o f
WWII Imperial Japan, complete with Zeros and the Yamato with the serial numbers filed off
. And I don't see why this would be objectionable, ANY of the modern-day first world country is objectively better than any pre-WWII nation. If that weren't the case, we wouldn't have an abundance of time travel stories trying to uplift the past or low-tech places they find themselves in.

So, thoughts... Gonna have to compare it to Gate: Thus...

THings it improves on are that it is much less aggro and death wank to the fantasy land, or at least gives lip service to it. They actually TRY to minimize enemy casualties, rescue enemy combatants from water (which is international maritime law), etc.

Also, much more gritty, and gives us a legitimate reason to really hate the first 'bad guys' from a moral stand point. Finally, I really appreciate the lack of 'fan service' crap that is just a waste of valuable story space.

Things it does worse than Gate? There is straight up no actual characters of significance. The few characters that you start to see some development on, are basically just to make their near immediate deaths more 'meaningful' to the reader.

This sort of reads like a summarized storyboard for a much longer, detailed epic length work of fiction. Basically, it is fleshed out the setting and the major events, but the personal storyline is still missing.

Finally, it's still a bit wanky towards the JSDF, and Japan in general, though I've seen (MUCH) worse. Anyway,
