Really should've actually defended the "victory point" there.
Yeah, seemed pretty obvious what was going on. But they had to leave the chapel to push the Authors plot.

Wonder if the childhood friend will be kidnapped and turned into a vampire, or will she have been killed. Didn't see the sword though, so maybe she hid with it.

To be fair, the city guards and adventurers were basically helpless against the wyverns without those two. I know we as readers don't really give a shit about the city's inhabitants, but they as characters in-universe seem to.
Just because a feint is a feint, doesn't mean you can ignore it, otherwise it will end up as the driving thrust.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting the villain in a series like this to do anything as remotely intelligent as send a body double to the frontlines to stand back and delay for time.
He's a little hot headed sure but I can't say he's unintelligent. His first plan was rock solid. Kill and replace the guard then get confirmation that the sword is Reve. I could say he's probably young though. He's smart enough to find out about the priest coming to do a job (recon is important) but his only mistake was not learning about the religion he's trying to impersonate. (He didn't think about as Archer would put it legends< aliases, backstory and group dynamic). Admittingly it's an important step but he could probably threaten or at least hypnotize the priest.

It's not that we are ignoring the town it's just the mc is asking a question that should be obvious to answer. With that obvious answer they should have moved accordingly. Al shouldn't have left the area. Or they should have moved the with them.
