I thought he could make some kind of ultra-dense wood derived stuff that might work more like a more breathable armor but still proof against conventional projectiles. Horses have poor temperature control, and full plate like they're wearing would be a real burden for them.

Considering Van's habit of enchanting his creations, I'm fairly sure any horse armor he creates will be both protective and cover any additional needs the horse's might have. Especially those with metal barding. Seems the illustrator didn't really do their research and doesn't know that they wouldn't equip such heavy equipment while traveling and only do so just before combat.

They were said to like riding horses and training with a sword, so it could well be a "eh, the prince(ss) has talent as a knight, and we've got a few heirs already, we can let this one do what they want, and train them to be a general who serves whichever of their brothers takes the throne". The logic stands regardless of if they're a prince or princess.

Doubly so for a princess when there're no neighboring nations they're on good enough terms with to even consider a political marriage - if there's no reason to prepare her for such a life, and she can't inherit the throne bc patriarchal succession lines or whatever, they'd have no specific use in mind for a princess and thus she could be allowed to train in whatever skills she shows a talent/interest for. If she has fire magic, let her become a mage. If she has talent with the sword, let her become a swordswoman. If she has a tactical mind, let her become a military advisor.
And if whatever she's really good at is a traditionally male-exclusive field (eg the military), let her crossdress and call herself a prince until she shows indisputable results.

Why the fuck is Arte joining the war, it'd be fucked up as is to be a tourist at a warzone, it'd be unthinkable if she gets captured.

On the other hand if I were to write the story after she said she can make a doll dance Van would have immediately asks if she can control other object like say a mithril stick. And turns out she's basically Magneto and paired with good eyesight, any enemy she can see will get a mithril needle ran through them before they can react.

So in this scenario, after demonstrating the city's defense to the king and now asked to go on the offense and bring his army. Van will just bring Arte and say she is his secret weapon, all the crap he created for the town's defense is to distract from Arte surgically killing them en mass with precision.

And also Arte is super into killing people and they're playing a game of time attack where she records how fast she can send the needle out into the commander and back.

The prince is the fourth time in anime/manga history were they introduced a male character and I wished he was a girl pretending to be male.

The prince, if he keeps his girlish looks, is going to be dangerous when he grows older. For both sides.
