That self-effacing, almost insulting "thanks for hanging out with our screw-up, useless kid" thing is a standard Japanese trope that is at least partially based on real Japanese culture, which prizes being so excessively modest and deferential about yourself and your family that you have to act like you/your relative is a terrible, unlikeable sloth of a person who is below deserving of basic decent treatment so that nobody could ever accuse you of being boastful or arrogant (unless you or that person are legit "special" in which case that level of arrogance is considered acceptable because you've "earned" it).

This is entirely a cross-cultural bit of confusion where something that is a part of the fabric of Japanese social interactions is viewed differently by westerners because it's not how we do things and that re-frames the discussion dramatically differently.
Yeah, this. This is a culture that has multiple levels of humble formal speech, the correct verb for giving something to someone depends on in-group/out-group divisions and comes with the connotation that someone is doing someone else a favor (correct usage puts the speaker below their in-group and the in-group below the out-group and using the wrong verb can turn a sentence from grateful to patronizing) and there's a whole other manga premised on a specific dialect's tendency to pointedly but indirectly say things with superficially complimentary language; the non-hospitality-based equivalent of "Thanks so much for coming, sorry the place is such a mess" is a commonplace social nicety in Japanese.

His family is so fun! :wooow:
They are all supportive of him and love him, sad that he turned out this way because of all of Rei's fanatics...:pout:

Rei seems to really care for him too, although right now he seems scared cause little bro might break his win streak lol :kek:

So it seems that the brother is scared or jealous of the MC. He seems to be really afraid that he may lose and truly views his brother an equal. He probably knows that his brother winning will break the facade he created.

That's your takeaway? Honestly, it seemed like he was a brocon and was excited about Youta beating him, making him proud.

(Cont. From the end of p20)
BROTHER "Also, you probably shouldn't smoke."
THE GIRL "This is a lollypop."
BROTHER "Oh."

And then his whole façade is broken, everyone hates him, and Youta gets all the girls. THE END, best manga ever. I am a master of script-writing and Hollywood should hire me immediately. If you agree, please sign my petition at https://www.change.org/p/make-me-the-holly-wood-folks-attempt-twenty-three, please. If it's successful I'll personally give everyone who signed it a nice, shiny penny. (If you're not from America, you have to get it converted yourself. Sorry...)

Is there anything cuter than a girl in men's clothing?
Besides a guy in girl's clothing, nothing comes to mind

A lot of people flipping over the parents for no reason is actually pretty funny. They never said they're only with MC because Big bro is too popular, they said they wanted to see big bro too but there's too much of a crowd. As in they want to see both sons. The brothers aren't doing anything rn, so the parents decided to come say hi, announce that they're there, and show support before wandering off to do whatever til the bros event comes up. They have signs for both, they wanted to stop by both, turns out they can't see one son so they're skipping him and going about their plan.
Y'all are REALLY projecting and/or taking a minor comment as more than it is

I'm well aware of that trope (definitely not my first manga, after all) but just because Japanese Custom is cool with it doesn't mean I have to like or agree with it either. Everybody got tropes they would rather see gone, after all.

If people think those parents are perfect, good for them, but personally, their next appearance better be way more enjoyable because if their roles are gonna be just bluntly stating the outrageous contrast between both sons while being completely oblivious about Youta school situation, they can go back in the background and kindly stay there, thank you.

They could, but here we see they aren't. Tohno isn't showing any form of resentment here, just embarrassment. At the very least, I think it's too early to judge.
we see he isn't showing an effect to a normalized behavior (that you're normalizing as well)
this is exactly why the parents are surprised when the kid finally has enough at 30 or 50 :wooow:

Youta's problem:
Girls use him to get to his brother. He is not being bullied, his brother likes him and actively tries to engage with him.
Youta's problems are that he has been the victim of shitty girls but he is also has a victim complex but has never told anyone of his family how he feels.

What his parents see:

Their introverted son who has friends and now a girl whose hanging out with him.

What the people in the comments see:
Youta is mentally getting raped by his parents, his brother, the girls in his school, the boys in his school, the teachers, his grand parents, his dog, his cat, god. Only him and Houjou are the good people in this story everyone else are evil.

What do you mean by that?
It's not like he is bullied or isolated by his peers (he has at least two friends).

I'm talking about all those girls (minus Izumi) only approaching him, pretending to care about him, just in hope to get closer of Rei.
