Legitimately get angry whenever I read "Tankrantula". It's such an awkward portmanteau.
It is actually easier to just say tarantula tank.
I feel kind of sad about this series. After having read the novel I can see the conscious changes the Manga makes to soften Akiras' harsher edges that made him an atypical main character.
They're still there in some cases. The direct desperate kid that was always on edge, that made people around him nervous because of his constant threatening intent, isn't really there anymore.
He's mostly just stoic now.
Also the subtle manipulation and deviousness of the AI is toned down a lot. I liked the idea of her basically feeding into Akiras' self centered and psychopathic behavior because it garnered his trust. She knew that if she gave any sign he couldn't trust her it was over. So even while she was manipulating him she herself had to bend and flex to accommodate his nature because he was so distrustful.
Ah well. Still good, just softened for public/main stream consumption.
You should know there are some key differences between web novel and light novel:
In the web novel:
Akira never forgives the pickpocket and goes on a bloody rampage to kill her.
Akira has a bit of a falling out with Elena and Sera when the two side with Katsuya in an argument. It doesn't really amount to much, and so it makes sense the LN cut it.
Yumina has a less developed relationship with Akira.
In the web novel, when Akira kills Katsuya, Airi goes on the run with Katsuya's faction, and Yumina is just never seen again. While in the Light Novel, Katsuya, Airi, and Yumina all die.
- He specifically let the issue of the pickpocket go the first time Katsuya got involved with to avoid fighting him. He very specifically picked it BACK up when the info broker sold info to a bunch of Hunters saying that he was an easy target because he got pick pocketed by a little girl and didn't do anything about it.
This then resulted in a mob boss kidnapping her to extort Katsuya into fighting a rival mob boss and his gang on his behalf.
This then escalated FURTHER because Katsuya is an idiot, showed up the same time as Akira did to kill her, and then got into a long draw out fight with him.
This incident was basically the end of "civil" discourse between the two and eventually ends with Akira in an all out war against the Katsuya Faction, where Katsuya eats a WELL earned death.
- Pretty sure the issue between the girls and him was just him being embarrassed because his and Katsuyas growing fued was spilling over into a job they were all working on and Katsuya couldn't be professional about it.
Katsuya basically asked them to take his side over it. They did what they usually do when he acts childlike and said they didn't want to get involved, though they were somewhat torn because they generally liked Akiras brainwashing more than Katsuyas.
In the end he chose to distance himself for a while because he thought his mommies were mad at him, but they were really just worried and upset he got into a fight again.
- He meets her once during the pickpocket thing, blushes, and scampers off. Honestly I do like this change in Manga. He has no peer relationships with a female hunter his age.
Yumina returns to Drankam with the remains of Katsuyas faction. Literally everyone is weirded out by how much faith they placed in Katsuya and how loyal they were to him. They pay Akira and have him sign documents saying he won't retaliate against Drankam. Katsuya pretty blatantly and unprovoked attacked him for revenge over the pickpocket during a bounty mission they both had for the City. By this point Akira is pretty well known as someone who will seek revenge and cause chaos in his persuit of it. Drankam at this point has lost a ton of hunters, including their mascot Katsuya, and are liable.
There ceases to be a Katsuya Faction at this point. Airi disappears and becomes a new host for Beta. It is implied that she wants revenge on Akira and is working with Beta to become more powerful.
You should mark spoilers. Anyway, you missed on how Katsuya's allies stole some Lion Steel equipment and were expected to fight Akira in the siege but disappeared instead.
The greater interactions with Yumina originate from the Light Novels. Light Novels and Web Novels are different things, and a lot of people seem to have difficulty processing that. Light Novels usually make things less edgy (like the pickpocket). I think the manga made Akira and Sheryl's relationship even warmer than the Light Novels made it, he was really tsundere in the Web Novel.
Ah, it's so nice to read the manga & see how calm & quaint the scale of the conflict was at this point lmao, i just caught up to v6p1 of the LN (book 9) & that fucking ending left me so goddamn worried about what's in store I wish I hadn't read it until part 2 came out. At least it's refreshing seeing Togami again back when he was just a dickhead like Katsuya instead of swapping between being depressed and being half of the only semi-healthy human relationship portrayed in this world full of psychopaths, lol
but yeah if anyone knows a place to read the WN translated lmk please boss they spent an entire volume definitively establishing which character is best (human) girl before immediately turning around & threatening my peace of mind & i hate it
someone has pointed out the different but yeah past volume 3p2 (book 6) or the arc after "Yonozuka Station" the WN and LN are quite different, and this manga pretty much follow the LN. the English LN currently has part v6p2 (book 10) on stream so maybe around 4-5 more weeks it would be available/published.
however WN are still interesting read, I especially love it when they actually show how dangerous is the sky can be.
