Something i've learned as a history aficionado is that religion was rarely the real reason behind religious violence and wars, it was just used to justify conquest as attacking a fellow christian was a taboo in the past, so you had to justify your violence with religious claims.
The muslim invasion of europe, the spanish inquisition, the slaughter of the templars, all of this was to obtain some gain either financially, politically or for resources.

This is why greed is the root of all evil, lust may be the source of greed, but it is greed that almost always causes conflict in human society as it is a desire for something that is not meant to be yours.

Ooh, interesting. I thought this would be a small stop, but things are clearly going to be hectic. The knights had prepared boats, so there might well be a sea blockade. I wonder if that tool that calms the sea could be used to prevent them from reaching the shore. Well, I guess the main concern for them is how to replenish supplies in time and find a way out rather than to participate in any war efforts. Still, a favour could go a long way for diplomatic relations.
