The elderly won't know Snow White?

Sorry can't resist talking about animation
Like I know foreign counties are not reading their kids books of European folklore and fairy tales when they have their own but I am sure they would know about Snow White. As an animation history buff I know Disney's "Snow White", that came out in 1937, is the first feature-length animated movie. Well the first first would be "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" it's a german silhouette animation made in 1926 by Charlotte Reiniger, but since it is a silhouette animation and not what is considered mainstream animation Disney gets the credit for the first animated feature. And though people today don't think its that remarkable back then in 1937 Snow White was the first of its kind and never seen before. So it had a lot of hype even by adults.

So I am matching the lead girl age to my cousin's kids and these elderly they are visiting their grandparents (my uncle and aunts) and one of them told me how they remember going to see Bambi in theaters in 1942 as a kid. Bambi the movie that Osamu Tezuka was a huge fan, the guy called the Godfather of Anime. So if Japan had viewings of Bambi they would also have them for the first animated feature as well.

And this isn't the first manga I read where a group of Japanese students adapt a western fairy tale for a play, like Fruits Baskets has an adaptation of Cinderella for their festival and then there are loads of Alice in Wonderland adaptions from japan and that's not even a fairytale!

Anyway, (sorry losing train of thought) I just mean kid-grandma feels like a special case grandma to me for she seems really old school and has purposely cut herself off from things while the elderly I know, while not always up to date, do try to keep to the times where its most useful, like while my grandmother never learned to text she understood how a flip phone worked enough to make and take calls, and my uncles and aunts do text and use smartphones. So I feel there is this intention to write the elderly as very classic picturesque characture in this manga, then as people trying to keep up with the times the best they can. Because the whole reason the elderly try to stay connected to the times is for the grandkids. (but that's also just my family I am talking about I don't know what other peoples elderly family members are like)

Anywho sorry for the long post I mostly did this to talk about animation (Cause boy do I love animation and animation history, and that's is a lot more informed than my so-so Japanese history and culture understanding so if anybody took offense towards that regard I am sorry)

The manga is still cute, can't wait to find out who that girl was to our lead

@Reademup Snow White may have came out in 1937 but that does not mean that it was out in Japan at that time. Snow White is essentially a foreign language film that most common people would not have had the ability to see or let alone afford it at that time. Period dramas would have been easiest and cheapest thing that would have been able to see if were they lived had a cinema. Now as people got older they may have seen more foreign language films like Snow White and Bambi but the type of thing would take them on a nostalgia trip would be period dramas.

It is a good thing to like animation and animation history but we cannot forget that life was like at that time as well, general history.

@Ebildays
Hey, thanks for your input. Help put things into better perspective for me!

Just one of the interesting things I love about reading or watching foreign media is finding out what somebody normal is. Like its nice when the translators include a note about local foods, national landmarks, figures, or historical events but there are just some things that are just too normal to consider or even explain like "how the elderly are" but how the elderly are is all about how they grew up and I don't know what Japanese elders are like and that's part of the fun I have while reading this, seeing what a "caricature of a Japanese grandparent" is like.

I hope you didn't believe I was dismissing something, I always try my best to be open and listen when somebody has something to say to further my understanding of a topic. Just like I said I only started ranting about Snow White for I get caught when I think people talk down about.
