On topic, some questions I had after going through this thread (I am just a simple reader, not a SLer or someone who knows all the details) ;

1] Right now, I am aware that going legit is an improbable meme, but as for now, MD is non-profit right?
Just donations that are used for servers/hosting?
(Personally I'd be fine even if they were for profit.)

2] Would scanslators be allowed to upload a chapter (or multiple as they come out) as just a simple white page with a link leading to their website if they didn't want it fully hosted here?

For example, [x] Scans has uploaded Chapter 1 to their website, and want people to read it there.
They come to MD, make a new listing for Chapter 1.
They upload a simple credit page that states they did the work, and if people want to read that chapter, they can go to [linked website]

Or would that be against the rules?

No, tried doing it for a certain problematic chapter of one of my series to avoid any readers accidentally skipping a chapter but was told it's a no-no. Thankfully though turned out MD at least lets you know when a chapter is missing while reading and gives a generic warning if nothing else, so didn't really need it in the end.

Same with h-commissions, one can get maybe $2 a page tops if they're decent, which for a tank might come out to $400~ for probably 60+ hours of work, quite less than minimum wage.

Oh, and to build onto this, that's less than $2 a page total. Translating, cleaning, typesetting, even probably fucking redrawing whatever horrible transparent bubble the artist had. You would have to be crazy to think that's a reasonable way to make money if you aren't living in in a third world country.
Anyone who does this for the money and isn't working with a legitimate company is a lolcow. If you want to sell your soul to Creutzfeldt-Jakob, that's probably closer to $10 a page, which is still a terrible thing to do, but infinitely less dumb.

Huh. Well, bright side is that it will cut some of the extraneous titles from my extensive follow list. Seriously, it’s almost a problem how many series I follow on a whim.

But in all seriousness, what’s wrong with MangaDex trying to go legit? Crunchyroll did, which helped the anime industry get a greater foothold in the west and become less niche. Half the stuff on here is never picked up by official licensers, and translations are only provided out of necessity.

While it's nice for artists to get paid more/etc/etc (if they actually do), the above is probably the worst part of it all. The influx of normies that now complain about shit in Japanese animu/mango/vidya as sexist/un-PC, and the self-censorship it can result in (see Sony), is the worst shit to happen to the Japanese entertainment industry in probably ever.

Not to mention the 'liberties' some western translation companies like to take, (i.e. Funi's so epic xD prison school dub raping).
