@YoroShie MD isn't explicitly illegal for being an aggregator, it's in a gray area, both morally and legally. Additionally, I haven't seen MD explicitly campaign for profit, and even the shop was a long-discussed decision with community consent. It is "donations" but oftentimes groups mislead their readers about the nature of the costs (not necessarily saying you do) such as JB. However, it is both hypocritical and disingenuous to take the high ground when you are literally profiting off of someone else's work that is legally published and license and the complain that you should be allowed to make a profit. Just because people donate to you doesn't mean you're in the right.

Additionally, I do have experience in translation for webnovels, which is admittedly a bit different, but I do know how these things go in general, not that my inclusion of being in a translation team should have anything to do with my argument.

@naeon

I am not trying to be moral here. But to tell you honestly, my team bought it on original raws sites so that we can at least give back to artist/author. You surely know why we do what we do, It's because we found a series that we found interesting personally that we wanted to read and can understand it by translating.

@Teasday ahh sorry sorry a couple of nice fellows further up, set me straight and I just checked the first page and saw the Edit by Ixlone so it's clear to me that it's a thing in the far future(possibly not at all)

thanks for taking the time to respond, I'm sure you've got better things to do.

I've read the entire thread and I'm unable to grasp what do you actually want to achieve after you leave the MD. Do you wish to create your own agregator? Make people to bookmark your webistes? Force MD to bent under your demands? Or something completely different? Because right now you just simply want to delete all your works from the site and say sayonara, but then what?

As a reader I just simply want to read manga that I follow on one site, not checking every evening about 20 different websites. What do you think the most readers will do when new chapters stop coming? They going to google the manga title. Make a guess which website are on the top of the results - kissmanga, mangakakalot and mangarock. On this websites chapters will be publish almost immediately after you'll publish it on your own websites, your work also is going to make money from ads or bitcoin miners for these agregators, and you won't even get recognized - good luck searching on this websites the scanlator info or even name - you do not matter there - only manga chapter does.

Of course, you will also hurt the MD as your series are attracting a lot of viewers, who will leave the MD. But in the end this will be only war of attrition, which MD will eventually win. New people will come to the site, new groups will be created, new people which are interested in scanlation will go to the forums and will be recruited. For you it will be harder to recruit new members as you'll be isolated, some existing members will leave your groups, as they became tired or have other things going on in life and ironicaly, if you became inactive or cease to exists, the chapters you've scanlated will be uploaded to the MD after 6 months, so in fact, you'll return the only site that cared about you and which you still despised.

You've lead to the situation where everyone loses - the readers, the scanlators and the site. Let's be honest about one thing - the threats of removal of all your series are not a big helper for you - maybe at least stop uploading a new chapters and cease your activity on website? But no, we have show how angry we are and annoy the readers of the series we scanlate.

I remember someone talking about something like this during the drama with Hatigarm getting sniped, any plans on allowing to post chapters in here as they are uploaded to the scanlator's websites? Obviously linking to their page as opposed to 'stealing' the chapters they release. Or would that be too nonsensical? Or maybe they'd just throw a fit anyway? I guess you wouldn't really want to keep sucking their dicks like that and it'd only benefit the readers' convenience, especially since fixing dead links would be a huge pain in the ass and that to these groups maybe it'd be no different than just stealing their releases (they'd get their adbux/patreonbux that way though??). It'd make the 'library' much more comprehensive though. I guess outside of letting them just leave, there's really no alternative to this bullshit except going KM route and just not give a fuck and scrape their releases.

@momoii

I didn't say even once that I am right. Like I said those are donated by supporters which honestly need too to pay for Raws and site stuffs.

And this was the only website that I know that acknowledges scan groups, unlike other manga sites with full blown ads and manga stealing bots. Can't believe this is happening.

Nice drama.

ffs can we just end this whole dramas about “manga reader” things and create a “manga indexing service” like what NU has done with novel translation projects…?

What a big pile of shit. Id be 100% behind MD here, and i totally wouldnt mind them going legit, i would pay anything up to 20$ a month to read mangas. But thats just the cruel world of manga and anime, everyone is so entitled and everything is DIY, people are just out of touch with reality it seems.

That being said, the biggest and realest fuck you goes out to everyone who thinks its okay to whine or beg for scanlations.

b~~ased scanlators trying to get me to stop being lazy and use twenty badly put together websites (that look like a highschooler made them) to read their shitty scanlations of garbage manga on their (again) bad website using their trash reader.
ill keep using my current two, ill still be able to read the handful of decent series you losers unfortunately have claimed.

Hahaha imagine having fucking JB be at the head of this shit and trying to take the moral high ground. The original post is outright embarrassing to read, you guys aren't fooling anyone

Ayyy this is interesting to read. The main takeaway is that JB and his gang don't want to be on MD anymore because:
a) MD wants to go legit (1st post)
b) Got mean things said to them, https://mangadex.org/data/91b484cee39632f23da5adeb466966b7/x15.png

Unfortunately, the evidence they presented for (a) is an out of context screenshot of some chat taken last year, and has already been given context by admins on the top of the 1st post of this thread. Please do read it. Basically going legit is a pipe dream and ONLY A DREAM.

For (b) though, I've read some arguments from both sides. 1 is better moderation in the forums especially towards crybabies who demand chapters immediately, I think that's a fine argument. But I've also read that some SL were pissed when they had some series sniped from under them and wants to be THE official unofficial scans, which I can't wrap my head around, we get it, you got pissed because of some other groups is sniping the series you put work and effort into. But let's say that I wanted to read Kaguya and it's delay-locked but there's a convenient link linking to JB in 1 click? Convenient. But hold on, some /a/nons translated it on MD and I don't have to go to another site and just read it right here and now? Obviously I'm reading it here purely for the convenience, not to mention the ads and crypto miners some accuse JB of having (I use adblockers anyway so I don't care if the allegations are true or not, please don't quote me on this).

I feel that after 28 pages, while acknowledging that mods are gay, the arguments hold no water. So comes the arguments arguing that JB and his gang are just after that sweet sweet ad and patreon revenue, which is relatively fine for me, but be aware that these groups operate on a grey area bordering on illegal. If somebody comes and "snipes" the series from under them, they are also operating on the same grey line that JB and his gang operates on, even if after all the hard work from scanning, cleaning, translating and maybe a million other bullshit that scanlators deal with. While illegal, C&D only comes once in a while which makes this a lawless land, people can and will snipe your series, or worse, aggregators will just take what you scanlated and put it up on their own sites without even leaving in your credit page.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all the hard work SL groups go through. As a programmer myself, I also appreciate what the MD admins are going through. I do support the delayed chapters implementation because there's a link to the SL's site and don't think it's an issue. I hope this drama can be water under the bridge in the future because I rather have MD's implementation than other shitty manga aggregators that I'll be forced to use.

As long as I can find those manga somewhere else (scanlation sites or aggregators sites, whichever), I don't mind this drama.

The way I see it is that:
They got free publicity by using mangadex as a platform in order to gather more followers, and consequentially more donations/ad revenue for the series they hold hostage. After they had achieved that, they decide to pull away everything under some pretext, so that all loyal enough readers would go over only to their site - hoping for more revenue I assume.
Seems reasonable if profit is the main motivating factor, and probably worked well enough considering that they haven't come back.

so, what kind of changes will this drama trigger on MD? i honestly dont know anything about this drama and dont really care so, how will this will affect my user experience? because i cant see MD going "legit" in a long time and when that happens i can just bail out.
