If you have a long-term relationship with someone and you decide to end it, it doesn't have to be because you suddenly feel absolutely nothing for the other person, or you don't feel any kind of regret about the fact that the relationship didn't work out. It can be because you simply judge that continuing the relationship will be worse and make you less happy than ending it. It's also possible to have feelings for two people at the same time, even if your feelings for one person are stronger than for the other.
