This story would make a lot more sense if it were told in chronological order. I think the author is trying to present how confusing it is to understand people. We probably won't understand the motivations of blue/brown/pink until we see their entire story. Instead of getting it all at once in an easily chewed bite, we're being served a complex salad of partial info a bit at a time. I like it.
