Linus Torvalds didn't become as rich through programming, but he's still at it, probably happily. Those are just a couple of world-famous examples, connected to computers. Every town will have less known examples of why losing a hobby by turning it into livelihood is not necessarily a bad thing. Though that being said, it doesn't happen 100% of time. A car enthusiast can make a living at a repair shop, but on their spare time might be rebuilding old Mustangs and other classics for his own entertainment (which is a hobby).

It really depends on the person. Some people need a separation between them, some people are the "love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." Some people are somewhere in between.
