while the father is a red dragon, if I remember right, the mother is a white feathered dragon, a type that can have soft fur, aside the normal scales, and feathers on her wings, a very beautiful and elegant type of dragons, make her of that type is maybe the best choice the author made for Mear's mother... even because if you think well, Mear is of that type too
